Ever since I can remember, heading up North for the weekend meant a weekend I wouldn't want to spend any other way. Whether it be the activities, food, people, or surroundings, it is always better Up North. There isn't sign to say "Welcome Up North," drawing a magical line between up North and the rest of the world, but you still know when you get there. Here are my reasons to spend as much time up North as possible:
1. A perfect afternoon can be spent downtown.
There is one word for it: quaint. The shops are unique and we feel so giddy about going home with one small thing that reminds us of such fond memories.
2. The food is incomparable.
When we are up north we split meals between our favorite restaurants, cafes, homemade ice cream shops, and flavorful signature dishes of our own. I can't think of a better way to cool off an afternoon than with a sugar cone of the flavor of the day. Not to mention s'mores over the fire a little later!
3. The people are incredible.
Everyone gives a friendly wave on the water in passing and chances are we are surrounded by family and friends, too. There is no such thing as a dull or wasted moment.
4. Nature is all around us.
If you're like me, you love spending time out on the water, hiking through the woods, and enjoying the wildlife. Going for a morning swim and a hike to watch the sunset reminds you of the things that really matter in life. There isn't a better way to clear our minds and refresh our souls.
5. Nature includes those skeeters.
Their bites sure aren't comfortable but mosquitoes are a part of the experience, might as well embrace their presence.
6. There are four seasons and each is amazing.
I am the kind of person that needs all four seasons to be distinct, and I get the best of them all up north: pretty spring showers and flowers, a warm summer breeze and soaking up the sun, the crisp air of the fall and its magnificent colors, and cozy days by the fire with the sparkling snow.
6. Memories.
The memories I have made Up North with my family and friends are going to stick with me forever. While we are there, we are always laughing until we cry as we reminisce, experiencing friendly competition of cribbage, who caught the biggest fish, exploring, or working on projects. Last weekend I painted and distressed a dresser with my grandma, it turned out better than I imagined, but it was the time I shared with her that made it so much better.
I'm so grateful to have spent so much time Up North and I cannot wait to go back.
"Life is better Up North."
