When I was in high school, I read Harry Potter for the first time. The summer after my freshman year, I binge-watched all eight movies within three days. That year was the beginning of my deep love for Harry Potter. I have not been able to re-read all of the books, but I'm working on my third time watching through the movies and every time they are just as good as before. I will never give up on Harry Potter and here is why:
Disclaimer: There are spoilers ahead! If you do not want the series spoiled for you, stop reading now!
1. The brilliant J.K. Rowling keeps the attitude alive
If you don't already follow her on twitter, you should. Whether she's talking about Harry or literally anything else, she's interesting, witty and downright entertaining. Harry Potter throughout the entire series was a master of sass and sarcasm. I firmly believe Rowling sprinkled much of her own personality into Harry as she created him. To read her posts are to recreate Harry's attitude in the real world.
2. She continues to create new, fantastic material
Every Harry Potter fan must have some apprehension and excitement about the new movie due to hit theaters in November. What new part of the wizarding world will it reveal? Will there be any new information about the Potters, or will it all be just general wizard knowledge? The Cursed Child was an incredible hit and I am jealous of every person that got to see it on the stage in person. I enjoyed every page immensely and I was ecstatic the day I found out they were releasing a paper copy. And of course, there is the always accessible Pottermore which helps keep fans attached to the wizarding world at all times.
3. The timelessness of Harry Potter is attributed to the lack of technology
The castle is very free from all computers, cell phones, wifi or anything electronic at all. Now while Tumblr has some very entertaining interpretations of what would happen if muggles brought the internet to Hogwarts, it keeps the books from becoming outdated by the advancements of science.
4. The classic tale of good vs. bad is a gift that just keeps giving
Viewers crave all the elements that Harry Potter so elegantly provides. Redemption of a seemly evil person, a child from a difficult past that is able to achieve great things, a mentor with skeletons in his closet, the awkward kid that becomes a hero, tension, romance-- it's everything you can't help but love.
5. It's relatable to every age.
When you're young and you just want to never go back to school, you feel like Harry. As you get older, life gets much more difficult. It's easier to understand the difficult decisions Dumbledore had to make, as well as the deep feelings Snape always harbored. There are even days I understand why Voldemort just wanted to rule the world so he could just get rid of all the idiots who ruined his days. ll people will be able to find a character they just can't help but love.
Harry Potter has forever changed my life for the better. Reading and watching the books as well as looking forward toward the new releases is always an enjoyable time in this often unenjoyable world. I just hope J.K. Rowling understands the extent that her work has brought joy to the world.
