Why I Love Celebrating My Birthday At College

It means just a little bit more.

I was terrified of my freshman year of college for one reason and one reason only: my 18th birthday was on the fourth day of school. All of my friends back home had turned 18 before me and I loved celebrating with them. It seemed a little bit more exciting than turning 16 but yet was more relaxed and generally more of a good time. In high school, I never worried about not having anyone to celebrate with because my birthday was around Labor Day weekend and everyone was generally around to celebrate on at least one night so it always worked out.

I was really scared about having to spend my 18th alone in my dorm room, which was obviously an over-exaggeration, but still a huge fear. I didn’t want to proclaim to my roommate and anyone who would listen that it was my birthday but I also didn’t want to keep it to myself. While my roommate and I were talking, the topic of birthdays came up and I mentioned mine was coming up and she got so excited. When the actual day arrived, I came back from my 5 p.m. class to find the few friends I had made in my dorm room with a poster that said “Happy Birthday!” and my bed covered in balloons. Needless to say, I had a blast that night and now I can’t wait to celebrate my birthday in college again this year.

I found that having a birthday while you’re at school is generally always just a little bit better than if it’s not at school. For college it’s obviously a little bit bittersweet because you’re not with your family. However, birthdays in college also come with a little element of surprise. You don’t have your parents around planning anything and you don’t really plan birthday parties for yourself. Everything is generally up to the people around you and that can be a very scary thing. Nothing is expected – I didn’t expect to come back to my room freshman year and find my friends sitting there with confetti, balloons, and cookies. It makes it more exciting.

Feel free to call me crazy or conceited, but I find that it’s reassuring knowing that people are actually paying attention. It’s interesting to see which of your friends from back home will send you something, or which of your friends at school will come say hi and want to celebrate with you. It’s amazing being surrounded by people who generally care about you and plan things for you not simply because it’s expected, but because they generally want you to have a good day. Sometimes, especially when you’re missing your family, it can be nice knowing you have other people around you who love you just as much.

For this reason, (and of course the obvious college party my friends and I are all planning to go to) I cannot wait to spend my birthday at college. I couldn’t imagine it any other way.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
