A Letter To My Big
Jessica Vander Pol

Anyone that is a part of Greek life knows that getting a Big is one the most exciting things ever. You are a new member who cannot wait to be spoiled with crafts and gifts with your letters and join a family that you will be a part of for the rest of your life. It's all great and exciting, but your big should be so much more than just your friend in the house. I am so thankful for my Big, so this is my letter to her.

Dear Big,

I know you've only been a part of my life for a few months, and you've only been my Big for a couple weeks, but I feel like I have known you for my entire life. I remember you picking me up on bid day and thinking "wow this couldn't be any more awkward." I pretty much avoided you the entire day. I was so scared that this was how it was going to be and I was honestly a little nervous. Things got better as syllabus week went on and I started to like you more, which I was thankful for.

You took me out on syllabus week, and that's when I started to fall in love with you. You served as my mom the entire week and made sure I always got home safe and was tucked in bed, just as you do now. I appreciated that even though we had just met, we made a connection right away. Ever since that week, I knew I wanted you to be my Big and to be my person.

As Big/Little reveal came up, I was almost positive you weren't my Big because you constantly ignored me and wouldn't talk to me. That was the worst week ever, and I couldn't be more relieved than when you unzipped your sweatshirt and we had matching shirts on that said "Big" and "Little." I felt so much joy in joining this fam and knew they were going to be my best friends for the rest of my life.

Now we are pretty much the same person. You are more than my Big and my best friend. You have become my family away from home. I appreciate everything you do for me. From always getting me home safe to helping me get away from weird guys at parties, you are my number one and my go-to for everything. When you're hurting, I'm hurting. I will forever care about you and I know you will be in my life forever.

Thank you for becoming such a big part of my life in such a small amount of time. Thank you for the hang out days at the house, and thank you for always being willing to drag me anywhere. Thank you for taking me on dates (because let's be real, we're the only boyfriends we need). I am always included and feel so lucky to have a Big like you. No one will ever understand how much you mean to me and I promise we will always have each other no matter what. You have made such an impact in my life already and I can't wait to see what the next three years of adventure bring for us.

With all my love,

Your Little

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
