Why I Love Being An Aunt

To two of the most precious people in my life.

Why I Love Being An Aunt

We all have people we care about, people we love, people we cherish and people who light up our lives. For most that may be parents, siblings, grandparents, friends, etc.. But for us individuals lucky enough to have nieces or nephews, life is a whole lot brighter.

From the moment I first found out I was going to be an aunt, my whole life changed. Soon, I would get to meet this little person who I would love and cherish as if they were my own. I would get to watch them grow, learn, develop, smile, laugh, cry, love, live and become their own person.

My nephew was born August 1, 2012, and I didn't know I could love a person so much until he arrived. From the minute I laid eyes on him I couldn't get enough. His little nose, adorable grin tiny fingers and toes melted my heart and suckered me right in. Soon my phone had more pictures of him than anything else and I showed him off to anyone that would listen.

In the past three and a half years I have been able to watch my nephew become the most loving, goofy, smart, handsome, ornery, wonderful little man I have ever known. I got to see him roll over, learn to crawl and walk, start talking and develop this personality I wouldn't change for the world.

Last year on April 21, 2015, my brother and his wife welcomed a beautiful baby girl, not only giving me a niece, but my nephew a sister. She has been the happiest, funniest, most adorable little girl and I am blessed to be able to witness her grow up. I get to hear her giggle when her daddy tickles her, I get to see her face light up when she sees food, I get to hold her and snuggle her to my heart's content. She has the spunkiest personality and I can't wait to see the person she becomes.

I do not have kids of my own yet, so being an aunt gives me some practice. Changing diapers, feeding them, playing with them, putting them down for naps, etc., helps me prepare for the future. One of the best things about nieces and nephews is, when they start fussing or crying, you get to give them back to their parents.

By being an aunt, you get to watch your siblings grow into terrific parents, which gives you guidance for the future. You will have more than just your parents to look to for parental advice, knowing your brother and/or sister is right there to help as well.

So thank you to my brother and his wife, for not only giving me the two most precious people in my life, but thank you for being good role models for my future.

Who knows what the future has in store for my niece and nephew and who knows if I'll get more nieces and nephews but I can't wait to watch them become the amazing and wonderful people I know they will be.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
