Why I Love Being Outside

On any given day, I'd rather be outside.

Why I Love Being Outside

Sometimes I feel trapped when I’m indoors for too long. Sometimes my life becomes consumed by a TV series or I just have to finish a video game. Typically what makes me feel better is simply being outside. Depending on the weather, I’d much rather be outside than inside. The outside world is literally limitless. There are places outside that still haven't been discovered by humans. Being outside prevents boredom, helps me feel less tied down and is overall just beautiful.

The sky is one of my biggest reasons to be outside. I am obsessed with it. It doesn’t matter whether it’s night or day, I will just stand and stare at the sky. I have a picture album on my phone with over 300 pictures of just the sky. If I ever get overwhelmed being around lots of people, especially at parties, I’ll go outside and just look at the stars. The universe amazes me, and to get to just stare at part of it for hours is really a unique feeling. Sunsets and sunrises are always breathtaking. I find it so interesting that the same sunset can look totally different depending on a person’s location and environment.

Flowers and plants are another one of the main reasons I prefer the outdoors. I am so into flowers. Daisies are my favorite and I just think they’re all beautiful. I love flowers, and even have a daisy tattoo, mainly because flowers are all beautiful. You don’t really look at a flower and think it’s ugly. They’re all unique and vibrant in their own way, and I feel like that’s how we should view ourselves. I’m the person that, in the middle of a hike, will completely stop to just look at plants. I get so distracted when I see pretty petals or a cool color.

I live for the moments when there is a really thick green around me. A few weekends ago, two of my best friends and I went to a river that was just surrounded by trees and mountains that were all green. The green stretched on as far as we could see. It was a sort of green river and plenty of green around us, which made me calm. Green, the more I go outside and the more I love the outdoors, is becoming my favorite color.

Letting my mind get lost while I’m away from electricity and lights and electronics is always a really uplifting experience. I love to just forget everything that I left behind and only pay attention to the world around me. One of my “happy places” is early in the morning at a park just writing. In fact, that’s what I’m doing now. I love just sitting by myself being surrounded by leaves and grass. I know it sounds weird, but being by myself outside makes me feel content. I get lost in the outdoors and don’t want to look at my phone.

I could honestly go on for hours and hours about leaves and grass and little critters. Flowers make me happy and trees are always beautiful, no matter what season it is! The sky is always pretty, whether rain or shine and the sun always feels nice on my face. I’d much rather be outside on any given day.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
