Life As A Dance Teacher Rules

I have learned more from the students that I have had the honor of teaching than I could ever teach them.

"It's a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together."

For as long as I can remember, all I ever wanted to do was dance. Well, OK, there were other things as well. But primarily, dance was the big thing. At 5, I took my first ballet class. It was absolutely life-changing, especially since it is one of my clearest first memories. Everything about ballet was fascinating to me. The leotards, the tutus, and most importantly the shoes. As a little girl, few things fascinated me more than pointe shoes. I mean, as a little kid, seeing a dancer "en pointe" makes it look like they are floating, or perhaps even flying. What kid wouldn't want to try that? Well, I had a plan to one day get those shoes, and that little girl's biggest dream got granted a few years ago.

Honestly, ever since I stepped foot on the floor for my first ballet class, I was hooked. From the very first plié to the first curtsy, I knew that was where I belonged. As the years went my love only grew. I mastered many steps, and struggled with even more. Let's face it, dance was, and still is my passion. I don't think that will ever change. That is why I have the best job in the world.

For the past few years I have had the privilege of taking my passion, and turning it into a career. Starting out as a volunteer, I have worked my up the ladder. Starting as a helper, moving up to an assistant, then to a student teacher, and finally to a paid faculty member. There is absolutely nothing I would change about the course I have taken for my life. Being a dance teacher has changed my life in ways that I never knew were possible. I have learned more from the students that I have had the honor of teaching than I could ever teach them.

There are so many things to love about teaching kids the art of dance, but these are just a few of my favorites:

I love seeing the little ones watch the "big girls" from the hallway, while trying to copy what they are doing.

I love being able to celebrate with students when they execute a step perfectly.

I love getting to share my passion with others.

I love the excitement that comes with being chosen as "line leader" for the day.

I love having the opportunity to mentor younger students, and growing a relationship with them.

I love the hard work that I see my students put into their art. From the littlest to the oldest.

I love seeing little ballerinas try on their first tutu.

I love being a safe place for my students to come when they need advice, help with homework, or just need a hug.

I love teaching how dance is an art form, and such a beautiful one at that.

I love watching parents focus in on their student while they are dancing, while beaming with pride.

I love the laughter that comes from baby ballerinas when I do something crazy to get their attention.

I love the excitement on the face of a student on the first day of classes.

I love watching my students perform on the stage, showcasing all the hard work they have put in over the year.

I love getting cards and pictures written and drawn by my students.

I love seeing students of mine make huge strides in their dancing.

I love baby ballerina hugs.

Honestly, I have my students to thank for making me who I am today. The push me, stretch me, love me and teach me.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
