Why I Love Attending An International University

Before students can begin the amazing journey of college, obviously, they must choose one of many across the nation and throughout the world. What led me to my school of choice is its beauty, diversity, and internationalization. This is what led me to the school I call home -- Troy University.

Aside from all the great things I could say about Troy, what stands out to me and to people across the world, is its international character. Troy University's international e-brochure points out that students from 65 countries attend Troy. Our dining hall, pictured below, even displays flags from countries all across the world.

What makes an international university so much different from the standard four-year college? That's simple: vast opportunity and experience you can't get anywhere else. As cheesy as it sounds, Troy is truly a one-of-a-kind university. With students from so many different countries, opportunities to learn about other cultures are not hard to find. During my freshman year, I participated in the Conversation Partners program -- a program that allows English-speaking American students to meet for at least an hour a week with multiple international students. This helps not only the international students but also English-speaking American students as well. Students from different countries get a chance to grow their English-speaking skills while the American students receive an amazing learning experience. It gives both sides of the conversation the chance to learn about each other's cultures.

Another successful organization on campus is ISCO, the International Student Cultural Organization. According to Troy's Student Involvement and Leadership page, the purpose of this organization is "to create an environment for international and American students that will allow ones to share their culture and ideas, and promote all social and cultural events that give an opportunity to explore other cultures". They host many events throughout the year for students of all kinds to get to know each other and become more aware of various culture trends. These events allow for students to join together in a way that is so unique.

It is pretty common in most places to hang out with and associate with people who are like yourself. This often can cause one to be unaware, and maybe even unappreciative, of others and their way of life. The beauty of Troy is expressed in its promotion of an international environment. It has allowed me, and many others, to see what else exists in the world -- what exists outside a 20-mile radius of your hometown. Believe it or not, some people never get the opportunity to experience anything beyond the realm of their own hometown. At times, it takes stepping out of our comfort zone to learn some of the most diverse and beautiful things in life.

From Alabama campuses to global campuses, attending Troy University is sure to be a one-of-a-kind experience. I will always be grateful for the internationalization Troy takes so much pride in. Some people may think of "different" as "abnormal," but we should think of "different" as "diverse" and "unique." This is why I love attending an international university. Students from all over get to come together while pursuing their education.

I am proud to call Troy University my home away from home.

Dear High School Friend Group,

My sweet angels, where would I be without you guys. We all grew up together because we either met in middle school or high school and watched each other grow up and get "old." We got to go to prom together and then graduate together. Then watched each other as we continued our lives in college, joining sororities and meeting people who will impact our lives forever. It all has happened so fast.

Oh college, we can’t live with you, but we can’t live without you. It’s a love/hate relationship, really. College is an experience that no one can ever prepare you for, and maybe that’s a good thing. You never really expect any of the things that college encompasses until you are there. College is fun, but don’t have too much fun. C’s get degrees, but they don’t get you into graduate school.

Blair Waldorf

The "Gossip Girl" series may be over, but Blair Waldorf's iconic character lives in our hearts forever. Blair was the queen of the Upper East Side, and a character you either loved or hated. She taught us everything we needed to know about life, love and of course, how to score a Chuck Bass. So the next time you feel a bit lost and are in need of guidance, look no further than to the Queen B herself.

As I spend my Sunday avoiding my homework and other adult responsibilities, I realized that I've watched this series over and over about a million times. Sadly, there isn't a Blair quote I don't know, so I came up with a list of a few favorites. You know you love her...xoxo

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help.
