Why I Love Astrology

Oh, you're that sign? Interesting

There are two kinds of people: the people who like astrology and those who think astrology is bull. If you’re one of those people who thinks astrology is nonsense, fine. I’m sorry you are boring and have no imagination, and I’m sorry you have no fun. If anyone knows me, they know that I am a big fan of astrology. I verbally express it and wear my taurus symbol as much as i can. I find this topic so fascinating because its interesting to see how the exact time you were born affects your personality or life. Many people find it stupid, but I find it incredible how everything is written in the stars.

I was born on the 16th of May, and am identified as a classic Taurus. They're stubborn, very sensual, and the most loyal people you will ever meet. Tauren are also careful, patient, and materialistic. On a darker note, Taurus' can be stubborn, insensitive, self-indulgent, and did I mention stubborn? (check, check, and double check). We don't get along with Libras -- which I think explains why I legitimately have no Libra friends. Taurus is an earth sign, and I tend to get along with more of the earthy signs like Virgo and Capricorn.

When my friends and I analyze people based on their zodiac signs, people shrug their shoulders and judge our nerdy conversations. But for me, astrology helps me identify and appreciate the unique qualities of the people I know. It helps me make sense of people in a way. I don’t find it coincidental that in my life I am surrounded by Pisces, or that I tend to be attracted to Aries -- they are definitely hot heads, and being a stubborn Taurus, I love the challenge they give me. Most Leos are sexual as hell, and Capricorns are the most hardworking people know, and I just can’t get a handle at all on Aquarians or Libras. Regardless, I always find it helpful to know someone’s sign.

I’ve never been the most rational of people and, honestly, I wouldn’t want to be. It’s much more interesting for me see the world as a place with the ambiguity of magic and mystery. People like astrology because it’s fun, it’s an explanation for every day life, and it makes people feel in touch with forces larger than they could even imagine. You know, like stars, planets and cosmos!

Ever since I was little, I loved space, and learning the planets. Remember the acronym? My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos (or Nine Pizzas, because I'm still in denial about Pluto). But, anyway, I loved space and not fully knowing what's out there. And astrology connects the two "worlds" together; it gives me a realization to why essentially people are different.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
