Why Looking Up At The Stars Is Important

It is easy to get caught up in the daily rituals of school or work and it can become hard to step back and enjoy the little things. My advice for anyone with a stressful week is to step back, take a deep breath, and enjoy the little beauties that are around us every day. This can be the flowers that are starting to grow, a little bird hopping on the sidewalk, or the clouds in the sky. My personal favorite is to truly look at the stars at night. Looking up at the night sky is a humbling, inspiring experience. Everyone has seen the night sky, but have we all truly looked at it?

When one truly steps back and looks at these stars, they are seeing history. They are seeing the stories of ancient cultures through constellations and the light produced by the stars millennia before humans were even on this Earth. Humans have always tried to make sense of the stars and of the wonder that comes from them. We have used them for guidance, for explanations, and for research. Stars are intertwined with the history of man. We are on this planet because of one and we are alive because of one. Looking at the stars is more than looking up at night, and it is more than just seeing a few white dots if you truly look.

Oscar Wilde once said, "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."

The gutter is obviously a metaphor for the daily struggles that we have in life, as morbid and depressing as that may seem. That can be something as simple as having a bad day to something as horrific as losing a family member and the grief that comes from that. Either way, we, as humans, are always in some sort of gutter. We are not perfect and neither are our lives, as much as we wish that they were. Wilde touches on something beautiful in his quote, something that we should all take to heart, something that can help us in life. "Some of us are looking at the stars." What does this mean? Does he literally mean that we're looking at the stars or is it something more? When he says "looking at the stars" he means some of us, the ones who are truly happy, are looking at something beautiful even when they are stuck in a gutter. When we look at the stars, we are looking at history and we are looking at something that is brilliant and beautiful. When we see a little bird hopping, we are looking at life. When we look at flowers, we are looking at rebirth, at spring. It is important to look at the stars because we will be unhappy if we do not. If we go through life never looking at a bigger picture and never admiring the beauty around us, we truly will be stuck in the gutter.

That is why it is important to look at the stars. So, stop looking at your smartphone and look up. They are beautiful, trust me.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
