Why I Look Forward To Living In The City

The reasons why I plan on loving my transition to city from suburbs

Why I Look Forward To Living In The City
Collective Synesthesia

As my highschool career comes to a close in the next few months, I now have to think about my future and where I would like to be in the next years to come. I have made the conscious decision to apply to colleges in a city, near, or around one at least. Many people scoff at this, shocked and ask "Why would you want to live in a city?"; I reply, "well, why not?".

There seems to be a negative stigma around living in the city; some of the sights and smells and experiences may have been unpleasant for others. Some despise the city while others completely love it. Everybody has a different opinion on it for varying reasons and that is okay!

My reasons are for the human experience, the personal experience I may gain from walking the streets, exploring the night life and learning new things every day.

In the suburbs, you are almost stuck. You see the same things, the same people, experience the same things and that is completely fine if you make the best of it. Which I feel I have done, I have valued the comfort and the convenience of living in a great town, with great schools. I have appreciated all I have at my fingertips, the opportunities and the blessings I have.

But it is okay to branch out and want more.

I want to meet new people – and not just a few. I want to meet people from every walk of life, I want to listen to people's stories of heartbreak. I want to laugh with others, sympathize with them, support them, and live life with them. I do not want to be in the background of someone's story. I want to be the main character or a supporting role.

I want to try new things. I want to go to a restaurant I may have never thought twice about, I want to go to concerts within a walking distance, go to a sports game and celebrate with the winners. I want to go to a hidden art show or a museum that caught my eye.

I want to see the skyline from many rooftops, I want to find who I am even in the midst of thousands of people, I want to run through a park while skyscrapers surround me. I want to see people hustle and bustle to go to their 9-5. I want to witness people's lives happen around me while I figure out my own.

I am curious, and I want to be able to bloom where I am planted. I want to have some street smarts, I want to be able to handle myself in a city, feel like a badass every once in awhile, and impress myself. Life is about experiencing, right? Good or bad? So suburbs to city move? Why the heck not?

Life will not wait for you, you have to go and do what you want to do. Make a move, do something different, surprise yourself. The world is out there.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
