I bet some people are already mad at me just from reading this title alone. I'm sorry, I just do not like Lilly Pulitzer. There it is, I said it. I'm a sorority girl and I do not like Lilly Pulitzer. It might have a beautiful appeal to the eye due to it's vibrant colors, but as a fashion merchandising student (and personally), I think it is terrible.
Now, do not get me wrong, Lilly Pulitzer has a beautiful history (look it up, it's a cute story), and I think it is awesome that Jackie O wore Lilly back in her prime, but honestly, I hate it. In middle school and high school I tried forcing myself to like it, but I just could not get myself to love patterns that are so bright they blind me. Here are just some of the reasons why...
1. It tries to make the beach an everyday thing.
Lilly mainly focuses on prints with a tropical theme. Here is reality checking in: not everyone likes the beach. I, for one, do not like the beach. I prefer the mountains over the beach any day. It is way too hot, it can be so windy, the sand can become annoying and gross. Plus, people who are more active and cannot sit still (like me) do not usually enjoy the beach as much. So when I walk by the Lilly Pulitzer section of Belk it just brings back memories of the beach (pleasant and not pleasant). So, I'm sorry Lilly girls, the beach is not where everyone wants it to be.
2. Lilly Pulitzer does not embrace the different seasons.
Something that is beautiful about life is the different seasons. If we do not face the cold of winter, how can be love the beauty of new life forming in the spring, the warmth of summer or the beauty of the leaves falling. To me Lilly has a "summer all year long" type of vibe, which is nice, but it doesn't really help us embrace the rest of the year. Plus I personally CANNOT stand when I see girls wearing a bright seashell pattern in the middle of December. It simply looks out of place.
3. The functional design is not up to it's potential.
In the cold winter months, what is a girl going to do? Their clothes are made of very thin materials. I know Pulitzer sells vests, and a couple of lightweight sweaters and scarves, but winters are harsh (even in the South, believe it or not) and a vest paired with thin clothes is not going to protect you from the cold very well.
I remember back in my glory days of middle school I had gotten a Lilly Pulitzer iPhone case (because I thought I would look cooler with one - we can all laugh at that) and it was made out of plastic and it chipped within a month. I went through like, three of these cases within a couple of months and it was so annoying. They do not make these anymore, but a lot of southern girls who grew up in the 2000s had this exact same problem.
So I'm sorry, Lilly, but if I'm going to pay that much money for your products I would like to stay warm and have my phone in my back pocket with a case that does not chip.
4. The bright colors... Enough said.
I'm sorry but Lilly Pulitzer patterns are just to bright for me. I mean, these patterns are brighter than my future for goodness' sake. Bright colors only mix in certain seasons, which brings up to the point of Lilly not embracing every season. Honestly, in my humble and personal opinion, Lilly Pulitzer products are way too bright.
5. Technology
If you were to go on to the Lilly Pulitzer website the technology section of their online store does not have a lot to offer at all. For example, they only offer phone cases for iPhones. Yes, iPhones are very popular, but plenty of people use Androids and other kinds of phones. Plus, there are tablets and iPads that are becoming popular So why leave them out? Their money is just as good as the iPhone customer's. On Lilly's website (when I looked on 12/30/2016) they only had four kinds of cases available for the iPhone 6/6s and six kinds of cases available for the iPhone 7. Meanwhile, other brands such as Kate Spade (my personal favorite) have twenty-five types of cases available for the iPhone 6/6s alone. Yikes is all I got to say.
My Lilly rant could go on for days. Do not get me wrong, I have respect for Lilly as a person and her company's history, but when it comes to taste, I feel as if I am being blinded and a migraine is coming whenever I walk by and see her products being sold in a store.
