Earlier this year, it was announced that the legendary Julie Andrews is returning to the screen with her children’s program on Netflix, “Julie’s Greenroom.”
In this show, the kids are learning more than their ABC’s and 123’s. Instead, toddlers will learn how to control their voices when singing, how to have an idea for a story, and even how to design lighting for a musical. Yes, “Julie’s Greenroom” is all about the visual and performing arts, which is a rare focus in pre-school children’s television.
Each thirteen episodes will include a different type of art: Acting, singing, dancing, creative writing, design for theatre, and more. Julie’s “Sesame Street”-like students will be mentored on a special topic by special guest stars, including Idina Menzel, Sara Bareilles, Chris Colfer, and David Hyde Pierces.
This show has a huge meaning because this will introduce small ones to the performing arts. It is common for kids doing acting and dancing when they’re little. But, by watching this show, the little artists would learn more about their passion. Similarly, before watching “Julie’s Greenroom,” a lot of the kids watching the show aren’t in the performing arts. So, they will be introduced to the arts and could be interested in them.
Most importantly, this show will have little kids know that the performing arts are important. In every pre-school show, they highlight the careers of being a teacher, doctor, police officer, astronaut etc. These careers are very important, which is why kids’ shows show them off. By displaying careers in performing arts, kids will know that these careers must be important. Because of the positive encouraging from celebrities and the exposure of the arts, kids will grow up with the arts and some of them will be celebrities, famous writers & designers, you name it!
Another gigantic factor is the fantastic diversity in this show. Three of the five of the puppets, who were featured in the trailer, are a minority. The dancer is Asian while the writer & the actor are both African American. The singer is happily the rare disabled child by being in a wheelchair. Furthermore, Giullian Yao Gioiello, the actor who will plays Gus the circus performer, is Asian.
Throughout my life, I’ve been a creative person. Ever since I was three or four, I have been writing stories. Now, years later, I’m a playwright/screenwriter, along with being an actress and singer. This is the show I needed as a kid. It had a disabled character just like me, which I would have love. But most importantly, it would have encouraged my writing and I picture myself writing a lot more as a kid with a show like this. But, the good news is I have a lot of little cousins and I’m thrilled that if they watch this, they’ll be exposed to the arts and might grow up as artists themselves.
