In the past couple of months, I've been finding myself looking towards the past, back to simpler times. I have made it no secret that I did not vote for Donald Trump and I am not his biggest fan, far from it. Which is why I yearn for the times before Donald Trump took up every minute of media coverage.
I have always been a fan of politics, it just took me a while before I started to share that passion. I had to wait until college before I could really find someone to share my passion for politics with. So with my Democratic-leaning views, I found myself drawn towards Jon Stewart.
I loved and still love Jon Stewart to this day. I enthrall myself with watching clips from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Jon was smart, witty and a joy to watch. He was America's voice and at one time, was one of the most admired journalists, even though he was not one. Jon Stewart was the man screaming what people felt, he was the one who picked apart politicians and called out the bullsh*t. When he left the show, everyone felt the hole where he was once was.
That is not to say that Trevor Noah is doing a terrible job, he's actually quite enjoyable and I love him as the host. He's doing his own thing with the show which is good. We didn't need a replacement for Jon, we needed a new perspective.
I miss Jon Stewart. There I said it. I respect the reasons why Jon left, I would've too. I don't blame him for leaving but I just wish he was still on tv. There were many reasons why I miss him and why Jon Stewart was the best.
1. His witty humor.
Jon Stewart's wit is something to be admired and feared. He could tear down even the most powerful man in a few sentences. I believe he still could. Jon Stewart was someone who could talk to a man a power and make a few juvenile jokes along the way without losing his point. I cannot tell you how much I admire his witticisms.
2. His mannerisms.
Sometimes, Jon Stewart didn't need a punchline. He just needed to give the camera a certain look and the audience would burst into laughter. That was the power of Jon Stewart's mannerisms. He could take you down with one look.
3. His intelligence.
There was something about Jon Stewart. HIs brain worked in different ways than the rest of us. It may have been his writers helping or something but I don't care. He always had a way of breaking down events and people for us and serving them on the silver platter for us to either devour or praise. Now, it is up to us to call out the bullsh*t in the world.
4. His passion came through on the show.
If you watched Jon Stewart regularly, you knew when Jon Stewart was truly angry. He could vaguely cover it with humor but you could see it leaking through. He was very protective of his city and of the people protecting it. He respected the policemen and the firemen. He was very protective over the 9/11 first responders. I have never seen him angrier than when Congress was refusing to pass the Zadroga Act, which would pay medical expenses for those who worked at Ground Zero. I highly recommend watching one the videos where he goes on his tirade. You can feel the anger and other emotions coming through and you will feel yourself becoming angry like Jon.
5. His sober monologues.
His sober monologues were something to be reckoned with. While they were devoid of humor, they were powerful and gut-wrenching. He had a way of touching on the emotion and searing those who would seek pleasure from it. When the Charleston church shooting happened, his monologue was about racism and how white people have the privilege. It was honest and refreshing to watch.
So all in all, Jon Stewart we miss you. We understand why you left but please, come back. We love you.
