Johnny Depp is currently hard at work filming the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film in Australia. On Tuesday, July 7, he visited Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane, dressed as his infamous character Captain Jack Sparrow. He spent time with the kids there, asking them questions, giving them gold coins, taking selfies, and walking around the hospital while completely in character the entire time. This video demonstrates just how big a heart is hidden underneath those pirate rags and tattoos:
He says to the children in the hospital, "I want to salute you, all of you, for your bravery and your courage, because that is all that matters." You can tell that unlike other celebrities, Johnny Depp is not just visiting the hospital as part of a publicity stunt, but genuinely enjoys spending time with these children and doing all that he can to brighten their day. This isn't the first time he's done this; Depp often visits hospitals as Captain Jack Sparrow, and has even been known to bring the entire pirate ensemble with him when he travels, just in case an opportunity to do something like this arises.
Johnny Depp is arguably one of the most interesting people in the movie business. He has played such eclectic characters as Edward Scissorhands, Ichabod Crane, the Mad Hatter, Sweeney Todd, and Willy Wonka. However, despite all the odd characters he plays, Depp may be one of the most genuine people in Hollywood. About acting, he has said, "With any part you play, there is a certain amount of yourself in it. There has to be, otherwise it's just not acting. It's lying." About life, he has said, "You can close your eyes to the things you do not want to see, but you cannot close your heart to the things you do not want to feel." Who knew a man who could transform into such a crazy cast of characters could be so insightful and compassionate?
