These past two weeks have been political overload. First, we had the Republican National Convention, followed by the Democratic National Convention right after. Though I identify with democrats, I always try and watch both conventions so I can hear what both sides are advocating for. Well, after watching both conventions, the differences are as clear as night and day. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Trump cannot become our president. Period. I truly question the mental state of his supporters at this point. This man has insulted everyone in this country and has no remorse for his actions.
Conservatives should be offended as well. Donald Trump is the face of the Republican party. Let that sink in for a moment. The party of our great President Abraham Lincoln is being represented by a clown. This is the man they chose to represent their party? This is the best that they can do? There were so many capable candidates, like John Kasich and Marco Rubio, but instead, they chose a reality TV star and a "businessman." One of the key takeaways of the RNC was that the party has completely strayed away from the traditional conservative values it was founded on, and I honestly don't know how they're going to recover from this catastrophe. The main message of the entire convention was to tell Americans that our country is sh*t, we should be very afraid, and Donald Trump alone can fix all of our problems. Yet, the one person we should all be fearing is the face of their party?
Then, we had the DNC. There were those who were excited and those who felt cheated. I will admit, I really wasn't eager to support any candidate in this election. I didn't feel that either candidate was fit to be the president. However, I knew that no matter what my personal feelings were, I was going to support whichever democratic nominee got elected. In our case, this candidate is Hillary Clinton. Never have we had a candidate who has her political history. Lawyer, advocate, First Lady of Arkansas, First Lady of the United States, U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and finally, United States Presidential nominee. She was not my first pick for president, but I am going to do everything that I can to make sure she's elected.
The entire convention's message was built on hope. Hope for a strong America. Hope for a better future. Hope for all of our generations to come. From Michelle Obama to Barack Obama to Hillary Clinton, the convention was filled with patriotism and the spirit of American exceptionalism; which is usually what we see at Republican conventions. You walked away feeling like our country can and will do better. That's the America that I want to live in.
So what's my point? We must all come together and make sure that Donald Trump does not become our president. What kind of candidate is able to make it this far without proposing one solid plan or policy suggestion? Trump doesn't know the first thing about the presidency and it would be disrespectful to our nation to allow this man to sit in the same oval office that both John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan have sat in.
To all of the "Bernie or Bust" supporters, I know you feel like you've been cheated. I know you feel like Bernie sold out. And I know that Hillary is the last person you want to elect. For a while, I felt that way too. But this election is about so much more than Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton. There is so much at stake and if we do not elect Hillary, our hopes of seeing a progressive agenda put forth are going to be shattered. Do not buy into the hype that Donald Trump cares about you, because the reality is that Trump is going to screw us all whether we are Democrats or Republicans.
A short-tempered man that has praised Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin wants to be our next Commander in Chief and have all of our nuclear codes at his fingertips. A man that has insulted blacks, latinos, women, our military and Muslims wants to convince you that he cares. Don't fall for it. Use your better judgement. No, Hillary does not have a squeaky clean past, but no candidate in history ever has. She's messed up a lot and she's flip-flopped on many issues (like many other candidates have), but her record speaks for itself. I feel confident that there is no candidate in this election that is more equipped to be our president than Hillary Clinton is. I don't agree with everything she does, and she has a lot to answer to, but the alternative is far too dangerous.
With that being said, make sure that you are registered to vote. Make sure your friends and family are registered to vote. Make phone calls, go door to door, do whatever it takes to make sure our country can keep moving forward. Democracy only works when we make it work, and low voter turnout is an automatic win for Donald Trump. As our President Barack Obama said in his convention speech, don't boo, VOTE!
