While working an event a couple weeks back, many people flocked to my work to partake in some extra holiday shopping. Discounts galore and fun times to be had by all. I was working one of the registers, and it's in my nature to say "Merry Christmas" when handing customers their purchase and I had been doing that all evening. One of my coworkers stood next to me for a minute and just as I had said "Merry Christmas" to an elderly couple (which they beamed with such happiness as if no one in their life had ever said that to them, which is a shame) said to me- "You should say 'Happy Holidays' ". Now don't think that I do not care about the different holidays that are celebrated around the world around this time of year. There is Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and a variety of other holidays that are important for other people. The holiday that I, along with millions of others here in America celebrate (we even get the day off for goodness sake) is Christmas.
While the list can go on and on about why we should say "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays", here are five reasons why we should.
1. Saying Merry Christmas isn't really all that bad to begin with.
Sure it potentially could be subjective because what if you have a Jewish person walk into your store, and you say the wrong holiday. In the event of that occurring, many will correct you (or won't). It's not a bad thing to say Merry Christmas, especially if you are feeling exceptionally festive.
2. It's part of your religion
The majority of people in this country consider themselves to be under the big umbrella of Christianity, whether they be Baptist, Catholic or Lutheran. So (at least in my book) it's perfectly acceptable to acknowledge the festivities of Christmas.
3. It makes people smile more than saying "Happy Holidays"
For some reason, I have noticed that many people respond more positively to "Merry Christmas" than "Happy Holidays". While I don't know why that is, it just makes me want to say it more. Watching people's faces light up is something to behold.
4. It makes sense
Even though I am Christian and I'm partial to "Merry Christmas", it just makes more sense to say it. Rolls off the tongue easier. It flows well.
5. It's part of what gives the magic of the Christmas season
It's not called Christmas for nothing... Saying Merry Christmas is a way to convey joy and peace to all. Regardless of religion (which many won't get overly upset that you said Merry Christmas) it's a phrase to bring a smile to peoples faces and give them a little love.
