Why It's OK To Be Selfish

Do you, boo. Make yourself happy.

Why It's OK To Be Selfish

Most people think I’m crazy. I’m a girl who dreams of becoming a lawyer. I don’t care about the long hours I need to do homework. To study. To prepare for my LSAT. All I care about is achieving my goals and making my dreams come true. I’m a girl and I want to be a lawyer. I want to break barriers, smash through the glass ceiling and become a successful lawyer, even though the typical lawyer is an older man who works 80 hours a week in a NYC bachelor pad. Nope, not me. I’m going to be that spitfire Jersey girl rocking it in the courtroom.

No matter what your dreams are, you have to have the courage to pursue them. Even if you want to be a drummer, a musician or a makeup artist, and people tell you these sports of careers are few and far between, prove them wrong. Go after what you want -- the worst thing that can happen is you try. Try, try and try again until you've accomplished everything you set out to do.

As children, almost everyone wants to be an astronaut, a veterinarian or the next president of the United States. While most of our childhood dreams eventually change, it's true that sometimes the fire inside of you at 5 years old burns until ripe old age. So if your life goal is to become a musician, go for it. Practice until your fingers feel like they’re going to fall off. Showcase your work wherever you go. Tell everyone about your dreams. Play at local events. Make your name heard. Always know that you are capable of anything if you set your mind to it. Don’t let anyone stop you! Maybe you try and maybe you fail. But then maybe you try and maybe -- just maybe -- you succeed.

I’m not trying to be a motivational speaker or a therapist. I’m just trying to make you all aware that whatever you want to do, you can do it! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. OK, so maybe becoming the next Celine Dion is far-fetched, but use it as your backup plan. Be the teacher who is in a band. Be the doctor who paints. It doesn’t matter what you do in life as long as you’re happy and you’ve accomplished something you’ve always dreamed of. What’s your dream?

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
