Why it's Okay to Feel Lost

Getting lost can be fun. Especially when you are in control, and have the freedom of getting lost down any path you choose.

My friend Amelia takes random turns down random roads in the small town of Fredonia when we are out driving sometimes. Each road she turns down isn't always completely arbitrary, though. We'll both agree that a certain street looks creepy in a way, or mysterious in a way that draws our attention, and it forces us to want to explore it. If it weren't for those car drives, I would've never enjoyed the small little neighborhoods we've explored, that sit by the lake. I would've never enjoyed driving down the long country roads that sit by rolling hills, and fields of cabbage and colorful trees. These roads always make me nostalgic in some way, or remind me of summer road trips.

I apply this scenario to my life whenever I feel lost in other areas, and you can too.

It's normal to feel lost in life; whether you can't seem to settle on a major in school that clicks, or whether you've found a major, but you think it may be the wrong path. You may go into college loving math, only to end up hating your math courses, and then you may make a 180 degree turn to study something entirely different. It's frustrating not knowing which path is the right one, what the future will hold, or not having found a set "passion" yet. But you can have so many passions, not just one. You won't find them if you stay stagnant while letting the feeling of being lost bring you down. If you feel like your path in life isn't leading you anywhere, or achieving anything, then it's time for you to explore more of the unknown. Trying new things and making changes can be scary. But with a determined mindset, it can actually be really fun and enjoyable. You are in control!

I encourage you to challenge yourself a little more. Take a course on something that you thought you'd never like, just to try it out. Take a course on something that you may have overlooked before; maybe it always seemed interesting or different in a way, maybe you never thought it was your style.

You just don't know what the future holds. New interests and ideas are waiting to develop. But you'll never develop new interests and passions if you don't enjoy exploring the unknown! Take some time to try new paths, meet new people, and start new hobbies.

Take a turn down that creepy or mysterious road. It'll be worth it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
