Why It's Important To Be Selfish (Sometimes)

Because doing you is crucial, too.

Why It's Important To Be Selfish (Sometimes)

We all grew up with our parents and influential people in our lives telling us to never be selfish, to always think of others and their needs other than just yours. But now that I'm in my third year of college, I've realized that sometimes it's completely necessary - and even okay - to be selfish at times. This is the most important and crucial time in a young adult's life. The time when we're supposed to get the most out of life. The one and only time we'll ever be young and enjoy ourselves.

Here's why it's important to just do you once and while:

1. It allows you to concentrate on bettering yourself.

We grow up with hopes and dreams we one day hope to achieve. We want to be successful and happy, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. No one else can accomplish those goals for you. The only person that can make those things happen is YOU.

2. You'll be a healthier person all around.

When you're just the right level of selfish, you end of taking better care of yourself. You center your energy around yourself and can use that to your advantage. Making time for yourself is the best thing you can do.

3. It makes you focus on being a happy person.

When you take the time to just focus on yourself, you're able to find what truly makes you happy in life. When you find your genuine happiness, your family and friends will be more than thrilled to share that feeling with you. So technically, you aren't even being that selfish here!

4. You'll have better relationships overall.

When you know how to stand your ground and not take all the B.S. thrown at you, you tend to have healthier relationships with your family and friends. You don't have trouble saying no when it needs to be said and you don't let anyone take advantage of you.

5. You're more productive.

We like what we do, and once again, there's nothing wrong with that. It's okay to take time and focus on just you. And when you do this, you'll be surprised on how much you can really get done.

6. You're doing YOU.

It's only human nature to want to do things that benefits ourselves. People think such negative things when they think of someone who's being selfish. And no, I'm not saying to be selfish with every little thing in life. But it's important to think of the time and space you need for yourself. You are not being vicious in anyway! Do what's good for you and you'll be the liveliest person ever.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
