Eating alone isn't the end of the world.

Why It's Important To Be Independent In College

You're now an official college student. You're an "adult." If you haven't already done so, it's time to start doing things on your own. No one is going to hold your hand while you do your laundry, cook meals or work on projects. It's time to become independent.

Independence has so many benefits, here are just a few:

1. No plans required!

Personally, I enjoy eating by myself on occasion. I like being able to take a walk down to the river by myself and enjoy a sunset. I like taking a drive and blasting music by myself. I don't have to coordinate with anyone, no plans involved, just me, myself, and I. Plans can get complicated, words can get misinterpreted, and it can cause all sorts of drama. Being independent lets YOU decide what YOU want to do, and when you want to do it.

2. Increased Self Confidence

Having independence can definitely give your self confidence a boost. When you accomplish something all by yourself for the first time, it really feels amazing. The first time you go grocery shopping with your own money, step foot in your new apartment, or cook your first meal, are all cool accomplishments after having had your parents look over your shoulder at everything you did for 18 years, making sure you didn't screw up (thanks mom and dad).

3. You see the world in a different perspective

Once you really become independent, you will start to LOVE to do things by yourself rather than with a group. When you're by yourself, you look around more. At the world, at people walking by, at nature, at everything! Taking a moment to truly stop and look at this beautiful, fast-paced world, can change a perspective in a heartbeat.

4. You start doing things you WANT to do

Sometimes, you might think something would be awesome, but others might think "not so much." If you are independent, you won't care what they think, and you will go do it by yourself. Go to that pottery class you've always wanted to go to! Chances are, you will meet some great people there that you may have never met before if you hadn't gone! There really is nothing to lose.

5. You will find yourself

Not trying to be cliché, but when you are forced to start doing things by yourself, you start discovering who you really are. Your likes and dislikes and your pet peeves. You will learn that it's OK to be yourself, and that there's no one exactly like you, and that is what makes you special.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying to do EVERYTHING by yourself, but independence is a very good quality to have. It's a great feeling when you don't have to rely anyone but yourself. Next time no one can go to a movie with you, go by yourself! Trust me, it's awesome.

5 Things To Do That Are Better Than Writing A Paper

Don't waste your time trying to write that paper when there are so many more interesting things you could be doing.

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?

I can barely remember back when I was the only child. Most would say it’s because it is extremely difficult to remember things as a toddler but I would say it's because I was bored until my sister came along. My mother always says how important the "sister bond" is and with every year that passes I realize how right she is. Instead of writing a novel about all of the wonderful things there are about having a sister I decided to list a few of them instead.

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.

If you’re anything like me, you love a good cup of coffee. My coffee always comes from Starbucks; I refuse to drink it from anywhere else. Over the years, it’s become one of my biggest addictions. College involves a whirlwind of emotions, whether it’s from the stress of an assignment (or twenty), or from fighting with your roommate.
