Dear College Students and Everybody Else,
There are a number of reasons why it is hard for college students to go to bed early. We may want to and we may say we are going to, but in reality, it rarely ever happens. And get this, we are always tired; ALWAYS! I am a huge culprit of saying I'm going to sleep early and then not following through with it. Trust me it is a lot harder said than done. We love sleeping too, so you would think we would always be in bed, but usually that just is not the case when you are a busy college student.
Homework is a huge factor of not getting into those cozy pajamas at a reasonable time. The work load we get each day keeps piling on top of the last until we're drowning and struggling to get back out. That is when late night homework and study sessions break out. The all-nighters begin. Beware of the all-nighters they will catch up with you and haunt you later. People say just get it done during the day, but when you only have one hour between classes and you are trying to eat lunch it could be rough. After classes when you might have practice or a club meeting it is almost impossible to get anything accomplished. I know it is actually possible if you really focus, but it is tough. At that point, your day is basically gone and you are left to struggle through the night with your work.
Internship. If you do not have homework because you are on semester internship you are going to be exposed to a different level of being exhausted. It is like you are a big girl or boy now with real world jobs. You have to be up early to make it to the office for an eight hour day about four days a week. Welcome to the real world. Since starting internship you will think that it might be a good idea to try and go to bed earlier. This way when you are at internship you can be really productive and give it all of your attention and focus in on your work since you want to make a good impression. However, this is really hard when your body is used to falling asleep by one a.m. every night. Every day after internship you will make an agreement with yourself that you will be going to bed early that night, but then something will come up and it just won't happen. This is especially with thesis knocking at your door to pull all-nighters since you will be spending your days at internship with no time to work on it.
Loud neighbors are the worst when you are trying to go to sleep early. When your neighbors are right outside your window every single night being really loud it becomes a struggle to fall asleep. No one wants to be that person to ruin the fun, but hey at some point someone has to be. I was that person just recently, I finally got into bed at a decent time, but then I was not able to sleep. My neighbors were so loud right outside my window. I really did not want to be that girl that went out there complaining about noise, but come on it was a Tuesday night. If it was a night Thursday through Saturday I could care less. I ended up going out there asking them nicely to just be a little quieter since they were outside my window. They immediately apologized and to my surprise were actually quiet for the rest of the night.
Netflix and naps are one hundred percent affect going to bed at a decent hour of the night. College students love naps and Netflix. The two are like an addiction for us. Some people take a nap every chance they get between their classes. When that happens that means homework is not getting done setting you up for an all-nighter filled with boring homework. Netflix is a huge addiction. The next episode is already there waiting for you, you do not even have to click it, it will start playing automatically. Sometimes it really is impossible to stop watching. You just need to know what happens next, you need too! Waiting till the next day might just kill you. That sleep you are missing out on because of Netflix is going to catch up with you and it is not going to be pretty.
Parties and bars are an enormous factor for the sleepless nights Thursday through Saturday! A lot of college students like to party. On the weekends most of the campuses population is most likely not going to sleep at a normal hour. Some nights range from getting in bed by one a.m. to some nights that you some manage not to crawl into your bed until four a.m. You will be trying to catch up for a while after those long weekends.
Do not worry though we will sleep when were out of college, right? No big deal. Who needs sleep anyways? College students are not supposed to sleep, right?
P.S. try to get some sleep you deserve it!
Sincerely your always tired college student. xoxo
