Why It's Good To Go Away For College

College is an emotional, life changing experience where you learn more about not only you but the world around you.

Why It's Good To Go Away For College

1. You become more independent

You spent the majority of your life under the constant care of someone else. Someone was there to remind you to do chores, your homework, to guide you and was responsible for you. Now you’re away and you have to learn to become responsible enough to do your chores without being told to. You no longer have someone else pushing you to go to class, you have to do it on your own. You’ll make mistakes along the way, but that’s the best way to learn.

2. You rediscover yourself by being introduced to new ideas

Your hometown might have had a set of norms and shared beliefs among those who lived there. You may not even realize there could be a status quo where you live, until you travel and live somewhere else. Moving away from home or going away to college with students and professors from all over can broaden your horizons. You become more knowledgeable about different beliefs and ideas, you learn to become more tolerant and respectful of others. You may even start to question some of the beliefs and the status quo of your hometown, which can begin an exciting journey of personal growth and self discovery.

3. You begin to find out what you’re really passionate about

After going through changes you may either become even more passionate about your intended major, or you’ll discover what you originally planned to study isn’t for you. You might find a new subject you really are passionate about. All of the above is alright because it shows you learn to follow your own passion and striving for a degree you will truly be happy with.

4. You learn to have a greater appreciation for genuine connection and who your true loved ones are

Long distant relationships are never easy, platonic or romantic. Traveling away from a community you’ve spent so long with can be difficult. However, this allows you to learn who cares enough to keep in contact with you or who tries to make plans with you when you come back to visit. It’ll make you appreciate your true friendships more and make visiting your loved ones all the sweeter. Your newfound independence will also allow you to further value the work your guardians put forth while raising you. You will find relief in knowing that no matter what, you will have a place filled with love and support for you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
