Why It's Okay To Be Alone

Life is tough, but so are you.

In today's society, too many people have a fear of being alone. Being alone always has a negative connotation. People think that they might not find someone to love them and that they will never be good enough for anyone. After experiencing this myself, I've come to the conclusion that it is OK to be alone. It is not as bad as it seems, and here's why...

Being alone forces you to learn how to love yourself. When you are constantly surrounded by so many people, it becomes easy to forget who you are. You find yourself changing to fit other people's needs, and not your own. Being alone helps you to reclaim your sense of identity. You remember what it takes to make yourself happy. When you start doing things for you again, you remember how to make yourself feel loved. Solitude also helps you think. Being alone forces you to be alone with your own thoughts, which might seem like a hard thing to do. But thinking alone helps to make sure that your thoughts are only your thoughts -- that they aren't influenced by others. Today, it is so easy to confuse your opinions with others because you're constantly surrounded by the beliefs of others. It's good to hear these diverse opinions, but it is also good to remember your own. Being alone helps you to clear your head and think about what is important to you.

"You can't pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first," is a quote that I came upon that speaks great volumes about being alone and what it can truly do for you. An important thing to always remember is that in order for you to love anyone, you have to love yourself first. In order to love yourself, you have to make time for yourself. If you ever want to be able to love someone else, make sure you're full of love to give, and sometimes it takes alone time to figure this out.

Being with other people is a really important part of life, but so is being alone. The next time you get to be alone, try and think of it as a positive experience. Read that book that you've been wanting to read, enjoy a nice cup of coffee, watch a movie and paint your nails. Remember to do the things that you love, for you and only you. Once you find this happiness in being alone, you will never feel like you are lonely anymore.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
