Over the weekend we watched thousands of people across the global marching for gender, sexuality, and race equality. It has been called one of the largest peaceful protests in history. However, people were taking to multiple social media platforms to speak out against the march. This is is very confusing for me. There were some dangerous protests after the inauguration that got slightly out of hand. But why are people speaking so bad about the peaceful assembly of people? Is this not why our constitution was written? Our government was designed to properly serve the people and the people decided to speak out.
I keep seeing this same tweet "Trump is your president so you all need to accept it." No. The government can't properly operate under checks and balances when one party has control of multiple branches. Our constitution gives us the freedom of speech and to assemble. Trump himself even tweeted that he respected the protests even though he didn't agree.
I wish more people could respect what all of those people gathered to do. I wish that women, especially women of color got equal pay. I wish people weren't still afraid of being targeted for their race, religion, sexuality or gender identity. I hope that one day people won't have to march for things this simple. And most of all I hope that America can survive this large divide and find it in ourselves to love and support each other.
