Little Brothers Growing Up

Why Is my Baby Brother No Longer A Baby?
Alize

It’s no secret I love my little brother. Thought due to the fact that suddenly he has become if not one inch short of my height at fourteen is pretty mind boggling. Now I am not that tall, I am a proud five foot and a quarter but I ‘ll round it to 5’2’’.

Lately for a lack of better words, he has acquired an attitude.

It has come to my attention that theyre are a couple of things that I can no longer do with him, some of the basics are as follows:

  1. Holding his hand while walking.
    1. Now see this is a gray area… I am allowed to only if none of his friends are around or if we are in a “safe, no one could recognize me zone”
  2. Hugs
    1. Hugs are gross in public and if I try to I get a resounding “what are you doing?” as if its some foreign gesture.
  3. Telling him what to do.
    1. I will get mocked, or get flat out ignored. When I tell you those hormones are raging… I am not kidding.

The changes that I am seeing in my brother are highly interesting.

I remember sitting on the couch with him just relaxing after a long day and suddenly it occurred. He has hairy legs. I gasp and tease him, of turning into a sasquatch overnight. He gives me an annoyed look with a dash of a smirk.

Now don’t get me started on his voice, that childish high pitched voice us non existant now. Its as if he dropped 10 octaves. I can hardly recognize his voice.

I have come to realize that this is all inevitable, his hairy legs will only get hairer, His feet wont be as small as when he was a baby, and yes it will hurt if he bites you due to the fact that he has more than just gums in his mouth.

I can no longer pick him up, now he can pick me up. I can rely on him to annoy me far more, thanks his new found vocabulary that can at times be intruiging... It is a funny thing to grow up, but to see it right before your eyes is definitly an eye opener. It is a as if we thought it would stay in one moment forever and suddenly you blink and you have a "Big Boy" turning into a man.

Yes, that is a picture of my brother from maybe over a year and a half ago, don't be fooled he's got some sort of a stash' going on now.

Au Revoir!

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
