Why Instagram Likes Don't Really Matter

"Take photos of what makes you happy, and I promise you'll like them enough for the rest of the world."

So often we find ourselves scrolling through Instagram and catching ourselves wishing we had what someone else posted. It seems like every picture you see nowadays is a "candid" picture of this adorable couple that appears to have everything together.

It is so normal to want to be happy and even to be jealous of someone else. However, things on Instagram like that are not always what they seem.

People are constantly telling their friends how they wished they were "relationship goals" or how they wished they could get that many likes on a picture. So much so, that it's almost a requirement for a relationship to have an aesthetic element to make it good for posting.

I know that I'm guilty of being like those people. I always scroll through my pictures and find the cutest one to post so that I can get the greatest number of likes.

Why do we live our lives like that? Why do we value something as intimate as a relationship based off of likes on a social media site from people that are sometimes complete strangers?

The fact of the matter is, likes on an Instagram post don't matter. Whether you and your partner are "relationship goals" or not doesn't matter.

Likes on Instagram are simply things that society has programmed us to think matter. Your self-worth should never be based on the opinions of people staring at a screen.

Do what makes you happy. Find who makes you happy.

Those likes don't come anywhere close to being worth as much as your happiness. Take photos of what makes you happy, and I promise you'll like them enough for the rest of the world.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way.
