Why Incoming Freshmen Should Consider Joining Odyssey

Like all new beginnings, we tend to feel nervous and a little lost. There's so much being offered and we want to try everything out. There comes a point where we try some things and end up not liking them. However, hardly ever the case with Odyssey. Here's a list as to why all incoming freshmen should join Odyssey in some way, shape, or form.

1. Joining Odyssey will help get your thoughts out.

Sometimes, all we want to do is get our voices and thoughts heard. A great way to do that is by writing your thoughts down and making those thoughts known. You have to start somewhere and if you never start, your thoughts will never be known. With Odyssey, they'll give you that extra push to help get your thoughts out into the world.

2. It's also a great way to practice and improve your writing.

You never know how good you are at something until you make the effort to sit down and start doing it. No matter how good a writer you may think you are, you could always be so much better. In college, you'll get a lot of essays and have so many other assignments that require a lot of writing. Joining Odyssey will give you the practice you need to help conquer all of your other writing tasks that you'll come across throughout the course of the next few years at college.

3. You'll easily make friends.

Most people join a club because they're generally interested in what the club has to offer them. With Odyssey, you'll be around people who have a common interest with you — writing. With this being said, it'll be so easy to talk to the other members in your college's chapter about it. You can always ask about what they're writing, what they're interested in writing or, even better, you could help them brainstorm when they're stuck.

4. You can easily create an online portfolio of your work.

Essentially, you never know where you'll end up five years from now. Most jobs and internships want to know that you made an effort to do something with yourself during your undergrad career besides just go to class and do your homework. With Odyssey, you can easily show jobs and internships that you didn't just sit around and go to class all the time by showing them the articles that you've spent so much time working on.

5. Odyssey will give you something to be proud of.

There's no better feeling than seeing all the hard work that you, and everyone else within your Odyssey group, get published, read, and known. It's one thing to do something once on your own, but when you're surrounded by like-minded people who share mutual interests with you and work just as hard for a group that they're passionate about, it's a great thing to see and experience for yourself.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
