Why I'm Writing For The Odyssey, And Why You Should Too!
Odyssey

If you know me, you may wonder why I talk about the Odyssey so much. Whether I’m constantly rambling about my amazing writers newest article, or I keep bringing up different topics to remember later on for possible article ideas the chatter never seems to end.

You don’t understand, but Odyssey has quickly become a part of my life and my world.

I haven’t been part of the team all that long actually, I started writing for the Odyssey back in July so it’s only been about six months since I joined, and three months since I’ve become EIC of the Oklahoma Baptist University Odyssey community.

I joined with the intent of sharing tid bits of what little wisdom I believe that I have gleaned with the world. I write many of my articles for my audience so that they get something out of what they’re reading. I don’t want them to feel like they’ve been lured in with some click-bait or forced to ingest some story with absolutely no value to them and they leave feeling like they just wasted five minutes of their lives that they will never get back.

I can easily say that joining the Odyssey community at Oklahoma Baptist University was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. And I’m here today, to give you a few reasons why you should write for the Odyssey, whether it be at OBU or at any University you choose to attend.

If you feel like you want your voice to be heard in your community or you want to share yours or others stories, then Odyssey is definitely a place you’d want to consider joining. So many people read these articles and share them with friends and family, so if you’re looking to write something you feel is worth getting out there, then Odyssey is definitely the place for you.

Along the lines of that, if you’re looking for a place to get some of your work out there, then the platform that Odyssey is, is perfect for you. I’m a News and Information major and I’ve started to add many of my articles to my portfolio because there are quite a few that I’m particularly proud of and feel as though they would be a good asset to my ongoing portfolio. I want my work to reflect who I am and what I believe in, and Odyssey allows me to start to develop just that.

Odyssey is also a creative outlet for many. You can write short stories, create any kind of videos, share your personal photography, you name it and Odyssey will probably allow you to do it. That’s definitely one of the things that reeled me in the most, the fact that there is so much freedom in what you can do and what you can post. You’re not restricted to simply one section of writing, rather it’s all at your fingertips and you can change your topics weekly. Say you want to post a fun how-to video one week, then another week have a deep heart-to-heart with your audience on a lesson you learned recently. Here at Odyssey, you can do that!! It’s cliché to hear, but the sky is the limit.

So friends, that’s all I have to say (for now at least) about Odyssey and how wonderful this platform is for so many people and how I’ve met so many wonderful people because of it. Now, here’s my shameless plug for anyone reading this to join today, we’d love to have you!

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
