Only a week and a day after the 2018 Women’s March, the Grammys aired. You may be asking yourself, "How are those two things connected, Morgan?". I'll tell ya. Only one woman won a Grammys this year. And the president of the Recording Academy seems to think that women in music need to "step up". Apparently, he's blind and deaf, because there are so many women in the music industry and they are doing some crazy powerful things! A fact the Grammys seems to undermine, especially this year. This time around, it seemed that anything with any sort of meaning wasn’t recognized.
This year, the opportunities to promote specifically impactful music were abundant. With the political nature of DAMN, the bravery Kesha has displayed this year, a push for destigmatization of mental illness in "1-800-273-8255", the honesty of Joanne, the Grammys could have promoted a variety of causes this year.
But they did not. Instead of awarding Album of the Year to DAMN, Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic prevailed. "1-800-273-8255," with its promotion of mental health and safety, lost to, yet again, Bruno Mars. And the one that upsets me the most: Best Pop Solo Performance went to Ed Sheeran for "Shape of You," the only male nominated in the category.
Let me tell you why this upsets me. Kesha really came out this year for women. She said, "I won my case so now it’s my job to go out, raise awareness of sexual assault and harassment, and help out my fellow woman."
"Praying" is one of the most powerful songs of this year.
You can’t tell me that Kesha didn’t directly have something to do with the happenings of this year with the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. While "Shape of You" may have more streams/downloads, the meaning behind the performance of “Praying" is what sets it apart and Kesha delivers with nothing but conviction and authenticity during a time when people were (and still are) fearfully silent.
Her performance of the song is much more than that. Kesha’s "Praying" is part of a bigger picture. Thinking about all “Praying” has done for people this year genuinely brings tears to my eyes, which is something I can’t say about "Shape of You." Not to mention that "Shape of You" is literally a man's song about a woman's body.
(insert eye roll)
There's no denying that Ed Sheeran is an incredible songwriter and performer. If a song like "Supermarket Flowers" were up for this award, we'd be having a different conversation. Other nominees brought something more personal to the stage and the Grammys are just rejecting it. When women speak up, we are often overlooked.
This is a classic example.
Each of these women has a unique perspective that they are openly sharing with the world. And it's frustrating to think that, as a woman in music, you can be discussing incredibly impactful and fragile things in eloquent and beautiful ways, but if a man rolls through and rewords the same lame story that's been told for generations, he's taking the crown.
According to The New York Times, in the last six years, only 9 percent of Grammy nominees were women. But according to the president of the Recording Academy, it's on women in the music industry to "step up". Yeah right. So Kesha didn't step up when she came out right and helped women to unite against their attackers? That seems like stepping up to me. And Lady Gaga didn't step up when she gave us one of the most beautiful, honest albums of the year? Please.
Something was even said along the lines of, maybe Taylor Swift will come out for women next year. This is a major problem. Taylor Swift cannot be the token woman in music because there are so many women the Grammys ignore. Women have been stepping it up for decades and it seems like they just don't care. More often than not when I listen to music, I'm listening to women. The music is out there, y'all, and it's excellent.
Don't let the Grammys reduce us to a token. Sometimes music has to be about more than just revenue. Music has power. And ladies, you stepped up this year in terms of powerful music. Even if the Grammys aren't recognizing it, people are listening with open hearts. Keep on keepin' on.
And if you need some inspiration, I gotchu...
