Why I'm Thankful I Roomed With Strangers

Before entering your freshman year of college, you're faced with a choice that very few people want to make: who you're going to room with. Now, some of us are more than excited to do this, but others rather just live in a single by themselves and call it a day. Most people tell you not to room with your best friend from high school, and although I don't know whether or not that is true, I am certain that I am incredibly grateful that I made the decision to room with two people I hadn't ever met. In fact, it might be one of the best decisions I've made.

1. There are no preconceived judgements

When it comes to having roommates that you've never met before, you really don't know what to expect. You don't know what you'll have in common with them, and you aren't sure that you'll even get along. But sometimes this can be a good thing. Because they don't know you, they only get to judge you by what they learn from you each and every day. They can't judge you for your past, simply because they generally know nothing about it, and you have the opportunity to learn just as much about them. You get a fresh start with new people and an opportunity to be the kind of friend you want to be.

2. Meeting new people is exciting.

and it's fun. Getting to know someone is personally one of my favorite things to do. There's something about learning about someone else that leads you to discover more and more about yourself. Since you don't know each other yet, you're more likely to have heart to hearts and grow a bond and friendship that will eventually become unbreakable.

3. It makes you more open minded.

College as a whole is a new environment. You're exposed to many things, some good and some bad. But living with someone is a different type of exposure. You get to learn about where someone comes from. You learn about their hometown, and their family, and you gain a new perspective that you hadn't had before. Living with someone takes cooperation, so if you're not open minded, it probably isn't going to go well.

As a whole, I'm incredibly thankful that I chose to room with two people that I hadn't met before. The opportunity to live with someone new is something that I think all people need to experience. Whether it's a good or bad experience you'll always learn from it, and grown from it. Luckily, my experience as been good so far.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?
