Every Thanksgiving I always take the time to reflect on all of the things that I'm blessed to have. Up until now, however, I had never really thought about how lucky I really am to have the opportunity to experience Greek Life at Florida State University. Here are some reasons why I'm thankful to be a part of this 100 year old campus tradition.
Diversity
FSU has 55 social fraternities including Panhellenic, Interfraternity, The National Multicultural Greek, and National Pan-Hellenic Councils. Each organization is different in its own way, and that's what makes it so great. There's a place for every student to get involved and find their own niche.
Service
Greek organizations are dedicated to serving the community and helping notable charities. I would have never had the opportunity to participate in such amazing events that raise so much awareness and funds for charities like Dance Marathon, Relay for Life and the other philanthropies specific to each chapter had I not joined Greek Life.
Stepping
Every Wednesday when I go to the Student Union and watch fraternities and sororities step and stroll, I am made more and more aware of just how amazing it is to be Greek. While my organization doesn't step or stroll, I have so much respect for the tradition and I'm always left in awe when I get to see it.
Leadership and Networking
Once you become Greek, so many doors open to opportunities to gain leadership experience. Within the chapter there are executive positions as well as other officer positions that you can run for. Even outside of the chapter, your brothers and sisters will help you branch out to become a campus leader. Especially in an organization with over 100 members, there are always going to be people who are involved in the clubs and organizations that you want to be in, and can help get your foot through the door. After college, the networking possibilities are endless and you can always count on a brother or sister to put a good word in for you when searching for jobs.
Friendship
On top of everything already mentioned, the friendships you make in Greek organization are the most valuable. Not just the friendships you make within your own chapter, but being apart of this culture means that you get to meet people from all different sororities, fraternities and councils.
Houses
Greek Life in the south means huge, beautiful mansions for sororities and fraternities. Florida State is home to the largest fraternity house in the nation, as well as sorority houses that have been here for hundreds of years. The houses are the great because it's where you get to spend time with your chapter and make lasting memories. I'm thankful to get to live in my sorority house along with 78 of my closest friends.
There are many other reasons why I'm thankful to have the chance to experience Greek Life at FSU. I encourage all students to get involved in a Greek organization and make the most out of the four years you have here at one of the greatest universities in the nation.
