Why I'm Proud To Be A Kappa Delta

This past fall, I joined what would quickly become my new family, support system, and one of my favorite organizations. I became a Kappa Delta sister and I have absolutely no regrets. There are so many reasons why I'm proud to be a Kappa Delta, but I'll limit myself to seven reasons.

1. We strive for "that which is honorable, beautiful, and highest."

While our open motto means something different for everyone, to me it means being the best you that you can be and to always strive for opportunities to better yourself and your community. What is honorable, beautiful, and highest to me? Making others happy whenever I can! (Also, yes, that is Luke Bryan throwing what he knows.)

2. We wear our letters on the front because we know our sisters have our backs.

There is always someone I can talk to when I walk into the Kappa Delta house. Whether I just got an A on an exam or need a shoulder to cry on, there is always a sister who is there for me. My sisters truly have my back no matter what!

3. We're silly!

Kappa Deltas are proud to be silly, normal young women who love to have fun! We aren't afraid to look silly as long as we're having a ball (no pun intended) with our sisters.

4. We raise money for an amazing organization.

Kappa Delta sorority raises money every year for Prevent Child Abuse America , an organization created by Donna J. Stone (a Kappa Delta!) raises money to help children escape abuse and neglect. As a future teacher, this organization means the world to me. No child deserves to go through any kind/amount of abuse or neglect.

5. The personal and professional connections are priceless.

On Bid Night this past fall, my now sister offered me a volunteer position at a high school. What?! It's no surprise that people pay dues to be members of Greek life. I hadn't paid a cent in dues yet and I was already offered an opportunity to grow as a professional. While I ended up student teaching at a different school, it was still so touching that she would offer me such an experience within our first five minutes of knowing each other. As lovely as that was, however, our friendship means even more to me.

6. We carry an amazing legacy.

Lenora Ashmore Blackiston. Sarah Turner White. Mary Sommerville Sparks Hendrick, and Julia Gardiner Tyler Wilson created a legacy that has helped shape amazing women all across the country. We are the future writers, scientists, doctors and nurses, teachers, politicians, Nobel Prize winners, Army generals, newscasters, and athletes you're told to watch out for.

7. We "throw what we know" because we love what we know.

We are proud to "throw what we know" (that is, flash our lovely letters) and know that these letters connect us to hundreds of thousands of other strong, intelligent, kind, and beautiful women. I know I will be throwing what I know as often as I can when I go abroad this fall!

Not only am I proud to be a Kappa Delta, I'm proud to be a member of the Alpha Sigma chapter! To date, we have raised over $100k for Prevent Child Abuse American and the New Hampshire Children's Trust. We also do campus tours with local Girl Scout troops and love helping them develop into confident girls, because guess what?

In love and AOT to all my Kappa Delta sisters, but especially my Alpha Sigma family. <3

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
