Why I'm Proud To Be A Brave

“You go where???”

I have heard this question far too many times to count. I usually answer by smiling and just saying it’s part of the UNC system because it’s just easier that way. I’m used to no one knowing where my college is and that’s okay because it’s exactly what I wanted. Somewhere to escape to and make a new name for myself, and that’s exactly what the University of North Carolina at Pembroke has given me.

The small 6,441 student, division II university was founded in 1887 and is rich in culture. The diversity is something that originally drew me to this school. I came from out of state and when I was recruited to play a sport I was welcomed by warm faces and a friendly environment. Everywhere I looked there was a different group of people.

The class size average is comparable to high school with the average of 20 students and some of my major classes have had less than 10 people. This has been an absolute dream to me. I would have never made it at a large university because I would have been lost, both literally and figuratively. I have become close enough with my professors that I can stop in whenever and ask them about their day and advice about anything ranging from jobs, my resume, to life crisis'. You will not be a number here, you will be a person.

This university has given me so many opportunities to succeed. For example I was given the opportunity to attend conferences in Tennessee and Georgia representing the school. I have been able to attend dinners with my chancellor, meet with the board of trustees and am on a first name basis with my athletic director. Where can you find that anywhere else?

I graduate in one semester, I have never transferred, nor has the thought ever crossed my mind. I hear some of my peers say “there’s nothing to do here” and my answer for them would be to get involved and make the most out of what this great university has to offer because the possibilities are endless. As a freshman and someone who was coming from out of state I had no idea what to expect, but I was not disappointed.

If you are looking to tour this school but are hesitant, give it a shot because if you are anything like me you will not regret it. The campus is a mile long, easy to navigate and has beautiful features. The professors are dedicated, it has great athletics programs, the people are diverse and your degree will be just as reputable as someone who went to a big university.

Even though most are unfamiliar with UNCP I can say that I am proud to be a Brave.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
