Why I'm Majoring in Education

I promise it's not because I'll get summers off.

Why I'm Majoring in Education

Ever since I was little, I've wanted to be a teacher. Honestly I wanted to be a princess but that's a lot of work. The thought of teaching a child skills that are going to help them achieve in life is so rewarding to me.

When I first tell people that I'm going to college to major in education, the common response is a laugh and "good luck paying for your future with that one". What non-education majors don't realize is, I'm not going to college just for the paycheck I'll be getting once I become a teacher, but the fact that I know I'm changing someone's life. We all have that one teacher who has change our perspective on school and learning. I want to be that teacher for someone someday. Yes, teaching is not a very well paying job, but honestly I don't care. I get to teach a child something new every day. That's enough of a payment for me.

Honestly, I don't want to work with adults all my life. Adults are mean and crabby and I REALLY don't want to sit in an office all day dealing with that. I would much rather spend the day with children in a colorful classroom. I don't know about you, but I would much rather do arts and crafts then sit in a cubicle filling out paperwork.

Yes, getting summers off is a huge bonus. But it's not even close to my reasoning of becoming a teacher. Honestly, it's not even a break. Teachers spend a majority of their summers preparing for the next school year. Because unlike some careers, we get to restart all over again in the beginning of September. Whether it's teaching summer school, getting supplies ready for the upcoming school year, or learning new subjects so we can teach them better next year, teachers never stop working.

"Haha you're stuck in school the rest of your life", that just means I get to learn something new for the rest of my life. Every child is different. By being a teacher, you need the ability to be flexible and able to adapt to every new class of students and how they are going to grasp what you are teaching them. It is their future, not mine. I'm just happy I get to be apart of it.

Let's face it, to some people there are more important career choices out there in the world. Such as; doctors, lawyers, police officers, firefighters, business men and women, etc. But what these people don't realize is the fact the world will always need teachers. There is always going to be new children coming into this world that need to be educated in order to be successful in our everyday culture. So going to college and majoring in education may not seem to be as "successful" as going to college and majoring in biochemistry, but remember someone out there had to have majored in education first, in order for you to be able to learn everything you did for your major.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
