I'm a junior in college at Tennessee Technological University, and here are 10 reasons why Tech has been my favorite home-away-from-home.

1. My Roommates (Past and Present)

In my going on three years on this campus, I have had a grand total of three roommates and, barring one, I have loved them. They made and continue to make college bearable as I get closer and closer to my degree.

2. It's just far enough away from actual home.

As soon as I got into high school, I knew I wanted to come to Tech. It sounds stupid but it was my only choice. It's close enough to home that it's not much of a struggle to come home if I need to, but it's far enough away that I feel free.

3. The Sociology Professors (Mrs. Brown, I'm looking at you)

Each and every Sociology professor that I have taken a class under has done nothing but reaffirm my major to me. It's been going on three years and I have yet to switch my major.

4. The Camaraderie.

People on this campus tend to just band together in times of need. I have met some of the nicest people on this campus when hatred is out in full. (South Patio Preachers, I'm looking at you.) We band together when people come to this campus to put us down. They shower us with hatred and we fire back with love and acceptance.

5. My Major.

I went for a long time in my life thinking I was going to be like every other woman in my family and go to school to be a nurse. When I got into High School that changed. I started looking at Sociology and I haven't turned back. Mathews/Daniel is a home away from home in-and-of itself because that's where I spend most of my time anyway.

6. The Friendships

I have made so many wonderful friends on this campus that half the time, I don't know what to do with all of them. I try to make at least one friend in every single one of my classes.

7. All the food.

And I'm not just talking about the options on campus. There are so many different food options not even five minutes down the street.

8. Campus Police.

They actually care! Me and my current roommate were walking around before sunrise last semester right before finals because FINALS and one of the Campus Police stopped us to make sure we were okay.

9. You can never be bored on this campus.

There is almost always something going on at Tech. Sports games, fundraisers, just people goofing off, you name it and you can probably see it here.

10. The University actually cares about us.

It might not seem like it with student debt, crappy wifi, and horrible parking, but they do. We've got lunch ladies that actually ask about our days, a concert every semester, and most importantly, PUPPERS! Every semester, we have therapy dogs come for finals and if that doesn't show they care, I don't know what does. #TECHYEAH

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
