Wrigley Field
There is not a stadium in major league baseball like Wrigley Field. The only stadium in the MLB that still has, and uses, a manual scoreboard. The only stadium with ivy growing on the walls, sometimes to the outfielder’s dismay. While Wrigley may not have state of art facilities or screens, what it lacks in newness, it makes up in history. And boy, does it have a lot of that. There is a certain magic that lurks in the bleachers. It hides in the dugouts and echoes in the stairwells.
Chicago Has More Passion
Chicago decorates the entire city when a time is in the playoffs. When the Hawks were in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Art Institute Lions wore hockey helmets, and now, when it is FINALLY the Cubs’ turn, the lions don their baseball hats, Cubs “W” flags are flown around the city, on every flag post, and nearly every statue is draped with a Cubs jersey. Chicago has pride in their teams, and passion for their sports, and that is what makes Chicagoan's so proud.
Curse of the Billy Goat
In 1945, a cubs fan, and owner of the Billy Goat Tavern, brought his goat into Wrigley Field for game four of the World Series. Because the goat was smelly, he was asked to leave and, when he did, outraged, he said something along the lines of “the Cubs ain’t gonna win no more”….and they haven’t won the World Series since (until 2016?!?). Whether you believe in the curse or not, you can’t deny that it makes for a pretty interesting story, one most baseball teams do not have. And I’m not saying I’m glad there was a curse, but it sure does make being a Cubs fan a little more interesting.
Cubs Fans are the Most Loyal Fans in Baseball
The Cubs have had some bad years. And, yes, I do mean bad. Blatant outfield errors, comical plays…there were periods when it almost hurt to watch a Cubs game. And yet, we Cubs fans, we aren’t your fair weather fans. Through the thick and the thin, Cubs fans support their team, in the hope that one day they’ll turn it all around (could this be one day?!?)
This One Thing Called ...
THEY JUST DON’T GIVE UP AND THE UNTHINKABLE COULD HAPPEN THIS YEAR
Sorry for yelling…I’m just very excited. After 108 years of a World Series dry spell, the 2016 Chicago Cubs have a chance, and a damn good one, of doing the unthinkable. This is our year Cubs fans, it has all been worth it. But no matter what the outcome, Cubs fans are still fans, and they’ll still be at every game next year too, no matter what. It’s just what we do.
