Why I'm Counting My Blessings

It's not Thanksgiving, but it's always a good time to give thanks.

Last weekend was 9/11, the 15th anniversary. With all of the innocent lives that were lost on that day, it made me reflect on my own life and see all of the blessing I have.

My Family

I am so thankful that I have a complete family because I know that some people are not as fortunate as myself and had to grow up without a mom or a dad in their life. I am blessed that I have a mother, a father, a brother, and a sister who all care for me. Not just my immediate family, but I am also grateful to have grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who are always there for me.

My Friends

I am so lucky to have the friends that I have. I would do anything for my friends and I believe that they would do the same for me. My friends are always there for me to vent to when something is going wrong. Whether you are a college friend, a hometown friend, an internet friend, or a friend from dance, I thank you for being a part of my life.

My Education

I am so happy that I am having the opportunity to attend college because I recognize that there are some people that are less fortunate than me and do not get that chance. When I look back on my education, I am also glad that I got to go to elementary school, middle school, and high school. In this country, it seems like a given to go to school when you are a kid, but in other countries children don't even get to go to elementary school and would do anything to be able to attend school which is why am thankful I have received 15+ years of schooling because some kids don't even get 1.

My Health

I am so fortunate that for my whole life I have grown up healthy. I have never had any major illnesses, I have never been hospitalized for an extended period of time and I am so blessed to be able to grow up enjoying my life and not having to worry about my health.

My Home

I realize how I am so lucky to be able to have a roof over my head at all times and always have food on the table at all meals. I have volunteered in the past at my local food pantry and see that even people in my own town sometimes wonder when is the next time they will get to eat (Shoutout to the Country Kids Food Pantry for always providing Washy with the food they need!).

These are just a couple of the blessing that I have in my life and I challenge you to think about in what ways you are blessed.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
