Why I'm A College Student And I Do Not Want Free College

Because someone else has to pay.

I am currently attending college, and I have been paying for it all out of my own pocket; and I want it to stay that way! I am going to college to create a brighter future for myself by being able to get a better paying job, and ultimately to be able to live a comfortable life and not live paycheck to paycheck.

During this election season, I have heard a lot about making college free for those that attend a public college and or university. I hope and pray this does NOT happen. Let’s be honest about this, nothing in life is free (I know I sound like an old cynical person, I DON’T CARE). Professors are not just going to work for free, colleges and universities are not going to be built and kept up for free, and campus security is not going to patrol at all hours of the day/night for free.

So, where is the money going to come from to make free college possible? That’s an easy question, taxes! You might be getting your college degree for free, but it’s a vicious cycle because as soon as you graduate and get that high paying job your tax rate is going to skyrocket making that nice high paying job not so nice and high paying. Like I stated before I am going to college to make something of myself and live a good life. I am not going to college to be penalized when I get out by taxing me up the ass!

Now, I do understand the argument for free college because it is very expensive and not everyone can afford to go, but I will counter argue that with if you can’t afford it then work your ass off for someone to recognize you and give you a shot, it does happen and it happens more often that you might think! Stop making excuses as to why you can’t get a good high paying job and step up and make a better future happen for yourself! This might sound harsh or mean but I promise you that’s not how I mean it. Getting through college and paying for it myself hasn’t been easy for me either but I do what I have to do to get through.

I have been attending a community college for 4 ½ years just to get my associates degree because I have worked full time to be able to put myself through night-school. By no means has it been an easy ride but when it gets really rough and I wonder how I’m going to pay for the upcoming semester or my books I just remind myself it will all be worth it in the end when I have a good job. You need to be willing to struggle at some point, work your ass off, and take big risk in order to make changes in your life. I think we all need to stop waiting for a hand out and make shit happen ourselves! So future president PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don’t not pass free college!!

PS- Sorry grandma for the curse words!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
