I don’t mind a nice breeze here and there to cool me down on my walk to class, but when the wind is whipping constantly, it gets old. It’s hard to want to go out when even after a 5 minute walk I can’t feel my face or hands. Whether it be a 2 minute walk to the dining hall, or a 10 minute walk to the car parked across campus, it is almost unbearable.
Being from New Hampshire, you think I would be used to the cold Maine weather. Well that’s not what happened. I like to snowboard, so I figured the cold would not be too hard to deal with, but some days are worse than others. Today I walk outside and it’s warm, wouldn’t have even needed a sweatshirt, but other days I need to wear my winter jacket. The sun is misleading, you would think if the sun is out it would be warm, but that is not the case. It is hard to judge the weather from inside your dorm room, so I really have no clue what I am walking into when I leave for class. Some days you’re fine with a long sleeve shirt, other days you need a Northface.
My allergies do not mix well with the cold. They are are usually gone by this time of year, but not this year. They are are worse than they have ever been, constant headaches, stuffy nose, and sore throat. The cold air does not help any of these symptoms, and makes it a struggle to walk to and from class. Also, don’t even get me started on how chapped my lips are and how dry my hands are. Winter weather is the worst because no matter how much chapstick and lotion you use, it is never enough to solve the problem.
The bright side is I can wear cute winter clothes, but sometimes cute does not mean warm. My dorm room could be 70 degrees in the morning, so I think that’s the temperature outside and dress according to that, which does not end well. I know I am in for a rude awakening because it has not even snowed yet, but I cannot even begin to think of how much colder it will get. It is bad enough in November, I do not even want to think about January and all the snow.
