This Is Why I Don't Pay For College

Here's a back story of what my life was before entering college:

The financial aid obstacles and struggles I've experienced with my family are very depressing. My dad tries the best to feed me and my sister every day, he can't find a better job to pursue my education in a university. I have stressed about getting things done in able to get into college. It's very difficult for us to sustain ourselves because we don't have my mom with us, she is in Mexico and can not come into the country. Me and my sister have been very dependable of my dad. I lived here in AZ until 10 years of age and moved to Mexico because my parents wanted to look out for their parents. We lived in Oaxaca, Mexico for about 6 years and because of our economic issues over there, my dad had to return to the united states in able to sustain our family. I followed him along because my parents that it would be better to pursue my education here in the united states. Once we got here we did not have enough money to buy furniture so we slept on the floor of the apartment we had for about 4 months. It was very difficult for us to be where we are now but all we can afford is to just to maintain ourselves alive and have shelter. My dad can not afford a university price, not even a community college, which results in me to be worried if I would ever go to college. If I can get enough scholarships it would mean a world to me, so I can pursue my dream of being a psychiatrist.

This was me a year a go today, I had no chance of getting into college I applied and applied and applied for many scholarships and was seeing not outcome. gladly I was able to obtain 2 scholarships, The Obama scholarship @ASU, and The Pent Grant award, and some money from FAFSA. I felt so happy that my dedication was awarded, you don't even know how many nights I would go to bed and cry thinking that I would never even go to college and I had to find a job ASAP so I can help my dad, but for my luck I did get this amazing opportunity of pursuing a career in college, with the help of high school professors and the motivation my parents gave me.

Yes, I'm going to college because I'm POOR, but that does not neglect the fact that I am a great student and strive harder to be successful and show the dedication I have for my work. I just want you guys to see how many people's reality is different, if your parents are paying for your college and you didn't have to struggle this hard you should be grateful for what you have, I did not have the resources to pay for college but gladly there are so many scholarships that helped me and with being a first-generation college student in my family, I am beyond grateful at life for giving me this amazing opportunity.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
