Why I Am Only Going 1 Day Of Lollapalooza

Would you pass up seeing Tame Impala and Childish Gambino on the same day?

Why I Am Only Going 1 Day Of Lollapalooza

I have attended Lollapalooza for the full four days every year for the past three years, but this year I just can not put myself through it.

The first year I went it was filled with excitement. It was my first music festival and I could not wait to get them and listen to my favorite artists with all my friends. I spent the day getting shoved around by people, losing my friends, and not really knowing if I liked it or not. But I know now how naive I was.

I went back the next year and had the same experience, except this time I knew something was different. That next month I went to Northcoast Music Festival and I experienced my first REAL festival. I was overwhelmed by the feeling of friendship and acceptance. Everyone was kind and you could tell they were there for the music.

The next year I went back to Lollapalooza except for this time my friends and I were a little apprehensive about attending all four days, but just like the years before when the lineup came out, we could not help ourselves. We found ourselves buying the overpriced four-day pass because how can you pass up seeing these artists in your backyard?? You can't.

Before attending Lolla last year I attended Spring Awakening and was reminded of the same feelings I felt at Northcoast, except this time on a MUCH larger scale. So, I became optimistic I got excited for August and was positive this year would be better.

August came around and that first day I knew it would not be different. We get there and the first thing to do was take pictures in front of the Lollapalooza sign and the Buckingham Fountain. So many only cares about the photos and saying they went to Lollapalooza. To me, it has lost its original purpose. It is not a place to go listen to music and be surrounded by people who have the same connection to those artists as you, instead it is a place to get the right Instagram photo.

After last year, I made the decision. No more Lollapalooza. I almost stayed true to that, but that lineup came out and Tame Impala and Childish Gambino were on the line-up and I knew I was not going to be able to pass that up, but I promised myself that I would only go if they played on the same day. Lucky enough when the single day lineups came out those two names were printed right next to each other.

I bought that single day pass, but this year it will be different. I am going to make this the best one yet because how can you have a bad time when you are seeing both Tame Impala AND Childish Gambino on the same day. That's right you can't!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
