All of the Gateways to Procrastination

Why Homework Really Takes So Long

It is no lie that college is a lot of homework and late nights. There is always a paper to write, an exam to study for, or an assignment that needs to be done. So, we brew a pot of Joe and sit down until the early hours of the morning getting our school work done. But why are we really up so late? Let's be honest that paper could have been done hours ago. An assignment that should have taken an hour or two ends up taking all night to finish. Needless to say we get distracted.

Music = Gateway to Procrastion

Listening to music can be a great way to stay focused or a gateway to hours of procrastination. Pandora plays a song you like. You want more. So you search Youtube for more songs and before you know it you find yourself watching goat videos.

The Sudden Need To Clean...Everything

Your room has been a mess for a week. The dishes in the sink haven't bothered you all day. But once you sit down to do your homework, you absolutely have to clean up. You become unbelievably motivated to do just about anything other than your homework. That fridge isn't going to just move and clean under itself, so it has to be done before any homework can be done. That's the logic at play.

The World Becomes Oh So Fascinating

That bug trapped in the window or the paint on the wall become so entertaining. Of course you must stop what you are doing to watch. It doesn't take much to seem more interesting than that research paper that is due in the morning.

*Bzzzz* *Ringgg* *Bleep Bleep*

Once that phone goes off, all concentration is broken. You have a new Facebook notification. Which turns into scrolling. Scrolling turns into creeping. And before you know it, you are searching through your best friend's brother's teammate's sister's cousin's wedding photos.

Roommates.

*Bang bang bang* "Get out here you have to see this!" "Let's go get some food." "The fridge is broken and everything is going bad!" As much as you love them, roommates can be the ultimate distraction from homework. They convince you to sit and watch "just one more episode," or you think "I will just do it in the morning" and join in on the conversation. You know hanging with them is better than studying so, why not?

Staying up late and dragging yourself to class in the morning is just part of the college experience. The papers get written, the tests get studied for, and the assignments get done...eventually.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
