Why Hitting That Brick Wall Is Necessary

When life knocks you down it's OK to lay there until you figured it out. Life isn't a race.

You know when life throws multiple signs your way and it is basically screaming at you to change or try harder at something, but for some reason you’re too stubborn headed to listen and then you do the opposite of what life is intending? This is when life sets that brick wall up, builds it right in front of you and then bam! Life knocks you down. You are left wondering why and how this happened. You get up and try again, but in your own way. Because once again, you’re way too hard-headed to listen to the signs or anyone for that matter. The wall gets built up again and what do you know? You are left laying on your back beaten down by life yet again.

Depending on your level of stubbornness (on a scale of 1-10, mine is a hard 8) you could end up hitting this brick wall multiple of times. Which also means you are going to end up with tons and tons of bruises (heart aches, disappointments, life changing experiences, etc.) along the way. This so called “brick wall” could be anything negative in life, really. Once you’re exhausted and worn down from all the smacking of the walls, you will come to a point when choosing where to go and which way to turn is confusing. You will feel lost and you will start to question who you are as a person. Basically living your life at a standstill, absolutely terrified to move and forming a sort of phobia of hitting that brutal, brick wall again and again. But that’s OK, eventually you will figure it out.

You may think hitting this brick wall is the worst possible outcome in life but really, it is just a lesson. The wall isn’t there to break us or for us to keep hitting it in hopes to knock it down (because frankly you won’t). Life and God are a lot more powerful than us humans and if the wall isn’t meant to come down it won’t. The wall is there to protect us and to stop us from doing any more harm to ourselves in life by continuing on the path we are choosing to follow.

Being stubborn and set in your own ways is a positive thing in some aspects of life, but in others, you need to learn to trust your gut and to just go with the flow. Our minds seem to take too much control of some things where the heart should actually lead. Your heart says one thing but your mind gets scared, so naturally as humans we run and sometimes we don’t stop until we hit a brick wall a few too many times. What is meant to be will happen and that brick wall won’t stop you from it. You can’t force things to happen no matter how hard you try. Who knows, maybe that brick wall is temporary. Maybe in a few days, weeks or months that wall will fall down. Timing is really everything and being patient is key.

So, the next time you find yourself lying on your back feeling defeated by life and all its tactics, get up and try a different direction. Look back on what you did and question yourself, “Was that right?” or “Was that wrong?” Think hard and long. Take as long as you need. It is better to sit in a standstill and move forwards or backwards in life rather than hurting yourself more by turning in the wrong directions. You will find your way out of the dark and you will soon be able to clearly see. Avoiding these brick walls will become second nature to you and the bruises from the past will heal themselves. Life gets easier, don’t let those brick walls keep you down.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
