Friends are so important. They help you through the hardest times and make you laugh so hard that you are crying. You and your friends get to experience a lot together. We all have friends that are all shapes and sizes. And all of our friends are different ages. For those of us that have friends that have a big age gap, we experience different friendships. Don’t get me wrong, we have friends the same age as us too. But this is why our friends with big age gaps have such a special relationship with us:
For some of us, they are older siblings to us. They are who we turn to when we need advice. They’ve been there, done that. They already know how to deal with it. They help walk you through it, and they make the situation so much easier. They offer you a piece of wisdom that doesn’t come from grandma.
On the opposite end of that, we gain younger siblings. We take them under our wing and guide them through what we’ve already been through. We want them to know how much we love them. We are here to protect them and help them as much as they want us to. We know when to back off; we don’t nag. This builds a better relationship of trust.
If you are one of those people who have a mature mind, this is why older friends are so important. You are in the same page in life. You have the same mentality when it comes to life priorities. You don’t feel dumb because you don’t want to party every night because, chances are, these friends are past their party stage. This makes you feel normal. They know you have school work and bills to pay. They are completely fine with drinking wine and playing Cards Against Humanity. It’s fun, but a different kind of fun.
We still need to keep those friends that are the same age as us. They are where the party is. When you need to shake off that bad work week or release some of that stress, that’s who you find. You have a lot of childhood memories with these friends and it feels like a breath of fresh air when you hang out with them. You feel pretty invincible; just like you did in high school. You don’t see these friends often, but when you do, it’s like you never skipped a beat.
No matter what age you are, most of us have a wide range of friends. There is always a balance between the ages and kinds. They are all so important. They all have special, unique place in your heart. These are the people that you have the most fun with, whether it be your last homecoming week in high school, or getting ready the day before their wedding. You experience so much with all of your friends, good and bad, death and life. Always remember to let them know how much they mean to you and how much you appreciate the friendship you share. To my friends: thank you for being my support and my fun. Here’s to many more memories.
