Why Do We Have Favorite Colors?

The world is too colorful to truly pick a favorite.

Why Do We Have Favorite Colors?
Eden R. Ellis

I've been coloring a lot lately. I have some pretty sweet coloring books, so there's really no question about it: I could spend hours coloring while listening to music or watching TV because it's just so relaxing and, well, colorful. Since I've always claimed my favorite color to be green, you'd think I'd use a lot of green in my coloring. This is partially true, but I realized that it's not my favorite color to color with. To me, the best colors always end up being deep purples and blues. Is it me, or does it come down to colored pencil quality? Or maybe, since I use each color roughly the same amount, maybe I like all of them equally? Can rainbow be my favorite color? Regardless of the colored pencils I'm using, though, I really do enjoy looking at every color. R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. and everything in between.

Why is that? I don't even know why I chose green as my favorite color, anyway. Why do people even have "favorite colors?" We're surrounded by all sorts of colors every day, so I can't understand why or how someone could ever choose a favorite. Some people are color blind; seeing color is something most people take for granted. Really, there's no denying that all colors are beautiful in their own ways. Also, when it comes down to picking out what color shirt to wear (for example), chances are you'll just go with whatever you're feeling that day without even thinking twice about your favorite color. Really, what's the point of having a favorite color in the first place when there are some days when you might like a different color better?

My favorite color is (supposedly) green, but sometimes I look at the color blue and think, "Blue's a cool color" (not literally, of course). Other days, I could be doing the same for red, pink, purple, yellow, you name it. Maybe there's always that one color you turn to (mostly for when someone asks what your favorite color is), but I have a feeling that you're not even wearing your favorite color right now. Unless your favorite color is something like denim or black, of course, because those can go with pretty much anything!

My point is, color is everywhere. Maybe there are some colors you like less than others. Maybe you'd rather not look at the colors of nasty things. But for the most part, color makes everything beautiful and vibrant. Colors have the power to change your mood, regardless of what you consider to be your favorite color. Reds and yellows are energizing, blues and purples are calming even if you don't particularly like those colors. Maybe you really do have a favorite color and you won't change your mind anytime soon, but admit it: That doesn't make the others any less awesome.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
