Why I Hated High School Dress Codes

Because getting sent home for a tank top is more important than my education.

Dress codes are meant to be put into place in order to prevent people from wearing items that are too revealing, scandalous, or inappropriate, which is understandable. School is a place for learning, not showing off your body to impress other people. However, dress codes have progressively gotten worse, and particularly worse for women.

In high school, I had to deal with a strict dress code, but it's not even the worse dress code out there. In my school if we wore tank tops, they had to be four inches wide, they couldn't be too low cut, and basically, if you had more cleavage than the average female, just don't wear tank tops because you're going to get sent home. If you had holes in your jeans, they could only be below your finger tips and the holes couldn't be too wide. People with shorter arms could get away with so much more than tall people with long arms.

Dress codes in high school are important, don't get me wrong, but sending a female home for having a three and a half inch strap or a hole slightly above your fingertips is ridiculous. A woman's education is just as important as a man's. I remember in high school, boys would show up to school with cutoff shirts on and no one said a thing, but god forbid a woman wears a tank top in the heat of summer. I guess a woman's shoulders are just too distracting, or her bra straps showing are too revealing.

In high school, I stuck to the dress code as best I could. I burned alive every day, but I followed the rules. Even on class day my senior year, I followed the rules. I wore a black long sleeved, high collared dress that fell below my fingertips. I wore this dress several times before class day and it was fine; however, when I showed up to school, my teacher pulled me aside. She said she didn't think it was appropriate to wear that dress because you could slightly see the silhouette of my thighs through the black material. I argued with her because there were girls wearing spaghetti strap dresses, dresses that were way to short, and some girls with their cleavage being overly exposed, and my dress covered everything.

She wouldn't listen and went and got the vice principal who sent me home and said she was sending everyone else home to change too. Twenty minutes before we walked out. I was furious. I left, changed, and came back and only two other girls were sent home to change. I was outraged. The vice principal came up to me and thanked me for changing even though my dress was the least inappropriate of the group, but I needed to change because I was distracting and dressed inappropriately. The other girls wouldn't even look at me because they knew I was so mad they didn't have to change because they were favorites of the teacher.

This to me is why dress codes are getting ridiculous. I was not dressed inappropriately. I was dressed tastefully and fit the dress code to the tee, and yet, I was still sent home, and the other girls who broke every rule in the code were allowed to stay. Sometimes I just believe people let the power from sending girls home for their clothes go to their head, and allow their "favorite" students to get away with a lot more than other students. High school was ridiculous, and I'm so glad it's over. Now that I am in college, I wear tank tops and guess what? Boys can still learn and teachers can still teach. Who knew?

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
