Why I Hate Labels

Labels are created by society and make huge umbrella's that aren't accurate.

Why I Hate Labels

Labels. According to society they are something that define you. They are something that limit you and put caps on what you can achieve. I hate labels, from the label of skin color to the label of knowledge.

Most of the time we label people or things without realizing it because it is what we have been around or know. From labeling a person "rich" or "smart" to "black" or "white". I know these seem like obvious things that we are stating, but we do not realize the stereotypes we create when we group people that "fit" into these labels together. Stereotypes that we are trying so hard to break down.

I am so tired of hearing one thing after another when referencing Caucasians in the south. I'm sorry, but I cannot control where I was born. I can't control if I am born into a family of African Americans or Caucasians. I can only control my actions. The same goes for someone born into a wealthy family. It's not like before a baby is born they have the choice of choosing a family of poverty and wealth. These things cannot be controlled by the someone born into it. Yet, all I ever see is someone ranting about "white people this" or "rich people that" or "black people that". And I am sick of it. Stop putting everyone under an umbrella just because of skin color or class or what they are involved in.

People are labeled all the time. Think about it, from "band geeks" to "popular kids" in high school, or the "frat boys" and "sorority girls" in college.

Better yet, stop comparing people or blaming other people for your personal issues. I am a firm believer in working for what you want, it's the athlete in me. But just by someone saying "Oh, you're black" or "Oh, you're white", shouldn't make you feel as if you can't do something. Because guess what: that doesn't mean a single thing. You can do whatever you put your mind, heart, and hard work into. Because hard work doesn't discriminate.

But that doesn't stop people from thinking that these labels people put them under inhibit them from doing certain things, or thinking just because other people are this then they should be that, too. Someone needs to take a stand to that. Because this isn't furthering society in any way.

We speak of change but all I see is people creating barriers against each other. Barriers that aren't doing us any good. We speak of people being equal but then we contradict this by proclaiming "black people" this or "all white people are racist". Because can we for sure say that all black people are thinking the same thing or that all white people are thinking the same thing?

Stopping the use of labels won't solve all of our problems, but I think it will be a huge start to something this world really needs. So, think about what you say from "those smart AP kids" to "those sorority girls," because people have too much individuality to put them under a broad stereotypical category.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!
