Recently, Netflix released another stand-up comedy special to add to their extensive collection. Titled, "Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King", the hysterical comedian discusses topics regarding racism, love, and growing up Muslim in America. Minhaj begins by telling stories of his childhood. He speaks about his parents and their journey to Davis, California to raise young Hasan. He continues to talk about how he was raised, his father being very strict yet unconditionally caring. He speaks of his sister and the hostile relationship they once had.
Minhaj dives into some very serious subjects in his show, such as his family's experience on September 11, and how their patriotism was questioned after receiving threats and abuse from their neighbors and peers. He talks about his senior prom, and how his date fell short because of her family's racist predispositions.
Although Minhaj discusses many of the shortcomings throughout his life, but more importantly he explains how each of these trials and tribulations helped to shape him into the comedian, and the man, that stands on stage today.
Minhaj graduated college and worked endlessly towards his dream of becoming a comedian. Eventually he landed a position on "The Daily Show" and proved to himself, his family, and those who had doubted him in the past, that anything can be accomplished with hard work. He further emphasizes that, since he allowed himself to take his struggles as lessons rather than defeats, he therefore could become an incredible role model for kids just like him.
Minhaj's material is far from the content you can expect from Amy Schumer or Louis C.K. He doesn't prolong raw, inappropriate and immature jokes such as Schumer; and he doesn't focus on the trials of adulthood and parenting like Louis. What he brings to the stage is entirely unique and much needed in the comedy community
Hasan Minhaj's comedy special, "Homecoming King" is currently available exclusively on Netflix
