This past week, I had the pleasure of finally seeing "Hamilton," the broadway musical that is sweeping the nation. To say I was excited is an understatement (trust me, I'm still crying). I had not planned on seeing it anytime soon, due to the extremely high demand for tickets, so being able to go was a dream. Since a young age, I have loved theatre. I have seen many broadway shows in New York City and Chicago, but this was by far my favorite for more than one reason. Although the positive feedback about "Hamilton" has completely and totally outweighed any negative feedback, I cannot seem to find one negative thing about it. Although I knew that it would live up to the hype and my high expectations, I know that there are some people who are skeptical of this. Therefore, "Hamilton" is everything and more, and I truly believe that anyone and everyone can find something to love about it. Thus, here are my reasonings for why "Hamilton" is not overrated (and by far the best broadway musical to grace the Earth.)
1. The Incredibly Unique Soundtrack
Who would've ever thought to combine hip-hop with broadway? The whole entire show is told through a phenomenal, lyrically genius hip-hop soundtrack. Expect the unexpected, the lyrics will blow your mind.
2. It's Based On A True Story
History lessons do not always amuse everyone, but this is a memorable one. The show is based on the biography "Alexander Hamilton " by Ron Chernow. You learn so much about the tale of the youngest founding father and his powerful impact on the US.
3. The Cabinet Rap Battle
The Cabinet Rap Battle was by far my favorite scene of the entire show. This rap battle between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson entails a debate over the making of the US Constitution. Seeing two founding fathers spit fire is a bit unexpected, yet so exciting and thrilling.
4. Hamilton Vs. Burr
As stated before, this is a history lesson. Many people do not know the true personalities of Alexander Hamilton, along with Aaron Burr. Throughout the show, you get to see each side of the story and learn about these historical figures and what our history books do not tell us.
5. The Schuyler Sisters
"Work, work...Angelica! Work, work...Eliza! And Peggy!" Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy Schuyler are nothing but a fabulous trio of sisters. The emotional relationship between Angelica and Eliza Schuyler will bring you near tears at times. They are a constant spark of energy and are all equally incredibly talented singers and actresses.
6. The Diverse CastThroughout the show, characters such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, all of whom were white, were played by a multi-racial cast. This was intentional and put a modern, diverse twist on the story. Aside from the insane talent, this makes Hamilton even more extraordinary and unique, and it proves a point and gives it more meaning.
7. The Break Up Song To America
I never did expect to say that I have witnessed King George break up with the Colonies through an incredibly humorous break-up song. "And when push comes to shove, I will send a fully armed battalion to remind you of my love!" If this isn't the most amazing thing you have ever heard of, I'm not sure what is. This is by far the best break up in America.
8. You Will Have All The Feels
Although I was overwhelmed with a multitude of emotions the whole entire show, the ending really did it for me. Yes, tears were flowing as hard as the Niagara Falls. The ending and the explanation of how Alexander Hamilton's wife, Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton, tells his story after he passes made me more than emotional. "Who lives, who dies, who tells your story?"
9. The Story Behind The Creation Of "Hamilton"
Prior to seeing the show, I have had extensive background knowledge of it due to my obsession. Lin-Manuel Miranda is an absolute genius, and his journey to the creation of "Hamilton" is unbelievable and empowering.
10. It Brings People To Broadway Who Had No Interest In Broadway Before
One of my favorite things about "Hamilton" is that it brings people together. This show is no longer just for a traditional theatergoer or a Broadway expert. I think that this show is for everyone, and everyone can find light in it.
